About 3 years ago a beautiful fat furry orange boy came into my life - Big O. From the 1st day I saw him he crawled into my lap stretched out and laid both paws of my shoulders and hugged my face. It was love at 1st sight. About a year or so ago there was a small gray and white kitten in my yard that was hanging around with Big O. I couldn't get close enough to the kitten to pet him but Big O let the kitten follow him around. Big O would bathe him and take care of him. They were inseparable. A year later I can now pet Squirt (the kitten) and he's allowed me to hold him a couple of times. What a couple he and Big O are. Unfortunatley as of last Sunday Big O was not feeling well and slept all day then he stopped eating. Monday no eating and then no drinking. I took him to the vet Tuesday AM and the blood work shows that he has kidney issues. His levels were all high particularly his potassium. I started him on fluids at the vets on Tuesday, & Wed. Still no eating. Wednesday the vet was going to give him an appetite stimulant in the hope he would eat. They told me on Wednesday that he ate and drank. I brought him home for the evening. He went to the litter box and it was very painful for him - he just made an awful howling type of meow when he went. He went a couple more times but no more howling. My hubby and I took him back for more fluids on Thursday. I bought him some special prescription food, Pedialyte, Nutrical & some Hivite drops but I couldn't get him to try any of it. Today is Friday and he's no better. He couldn't get comfortable last night and he's back at the vet today. My hubby and I have decided that this can't go on any more. He has no quality of life left as I can tell. He looks so sad and I can't bear to think of him literally starving to death. Tomorrow he will go to the Bridge where my little Brandi went in February. As if this isn't sad enough poor little Squirt is lost without him - he comes to the back door and looks for him. He's seen Big O in his carrier as he's gone to the Vet and yesterday he came to the carrier, looked at Big O for a few minutes and then walked off. One bright spot in all of this is that a couple of weeks ago (before Big O got sick) a little Torti cat showed up from nowhere and has refused to leave my patio. She's been out there almost 3 weeks now and Squirt has someone new to hang out with. He didn't particulary take to her at first but they are hanging out together. I like to think that maybe Big O sent someone to take his place with Squirt. Who knows? I'm sorry this is so long but I wanted someone other than me and my hubby to know about Big O. Everyone here is so compassionate and caring for all the things each of us go through as we love our furbabies. I'll enjoy my last night with Big O tonight and I'll try to be "grown up" about what I have to do tomorrow. You never get too old (I'm 52) to cry like a baby when you lose a beloved furbaby. Thanks for listening to me.
