My mother never-ever used that phrase to my memory. She always said "we can work things out together" and I can't think of a time where this, or her, failed me. "Get over it"? I would never say that to anyone that was a friend or relative that had come to confide in me with something with which they were dealing. Life at times can be a rough ride but I am one that always looks at the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

"Life isn't always fair."

"we're not made of money."

"I'm not running a restaurant!"

"I don't care what the other parents let their kids do!"

"if all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?"

Just some of what I heard growing up.

OMGosh...are you my sister, posting here incognito??{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

I think we might be triplets!

I can't even think of another one because cranberries covered them all! {#emotions_dlg.lol}

{#emotions_dlg.laugh}{#emotions_dlg.thumbup1} ETA Just thought about another on someone else posted. Watch out or the arm waving around in the back seat{#emotions_dlg.w00t}

oh yeah, bette. That one would always come after "If you kids don't settle down, I'm going to stop this car!" {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

I think we may be related!!!{#emotions_dlg.biggrin} And one other saying my dad always said if we were leaving the home: "Remember, what you do out there is a reflection of our NAME - therefore, if you lay down with dogs you're bound to get fleas!" and 2) I'm counting to 3 and don't make me have to do 4 (good thing he never had to!)...3) My mother's mantra was " i hear your father coming NOW you're in big trouble!!!" -- we never were afraid!

I remember when I got my first real paycheck my dad stating:

So much goes to the savings, so much goes to church and the few pennies left can go to you!

and when I married:

DON'T ever have joint bank accounts, he may be here today, tomorrow or more but YOUR MONEY will give you power to make good decisions. Make sure the kids have their names on it and leave nothing to him - he's a grown man he can plan for himself.

To this day I have my own finances and investments which are beneficiaries to my 2 sons. Upon my spouse death (or if we divorce) I will immediately sell this home and put the proceeds into a fund -- my boys do not want anything to do with this home in FL. I have my paperwork done so if I die first (spouse) needs to buy them out if he wants to stay here.

I don't recall many platitudes being said.

I do recall put-downs, name-calling, the silent treatment, withholding of food and medical care and various other types of dysfunction. Most of all, I remember the comments that cut to the bone. ("You can't wear that; those skirts are for skinny girls." "Do you really need that cookie?" "You and your father deserve each other." "If she leaves, you're in big trouble." "If I had a gun right now, I would blow my brains out." "You little b****!!" "Where do you think you're going?" "[Dad to Mom] You know you've always loved him [my brother] more than you love her [me]." "The sign says 'weight limit 5,000 lbs'...guess you'd better get out of the car!!" Q: "Dad, am I going to see [my dog] when we get home?" A: "Didn't your mom tell you? She's dead.") All of their commentary cycled through my head for many years.

Because of all that, I've had friends ask me why I even care that my dad is dying, and that my mother is a wreck. I've been told to just let them die and worry about myself.

I can't explain why I love my parents...I just do.

Just lost my sweet mom a year ago and I can still hear her saying "you can't put an old head on young shoulders". When anyone would talk about some kid we knew doing something stupid that was always her answer!!! She was a very wise lady and knew that as a child we all make mistakes, but that is how we learn.

This one brought back fond memories. My dear grandfather used to say this. He is long gone now.

I am sorry to hear you lost your mother such a short time ago. She sounded like a wonderful woman who left you with much of her wisdom.

((((mistriT)))) That just wasn't good parenting. I can see how that would stay with you, and leave indelible memories.

Breaks my heart that you and so many kids like you had to grow up hearing those things.
