From my Dad: ""Big girls don't cry"". To this day I still RARELY cry. Maybe once every 3 to 5 years I have a good cry.

My Dad always said "Listen more than you talk" and "Don't be afraid to work hard", and Mom always said "Choose your words carefully, as you may have to eat them later". My parents were very loving and supportive, and good role models to my brothers and I, which is the kind of parent I have tried to be to my daughters. My most spoken phrases are: "Get the * E L L over it", "It is what it is, deal with it", and "Pull up your big girl panties and deal with it".

Oh yes! Another one I tend to carry over to the next generation.

You may as well fall on your face as bend too far over backward.
It can't be that bad and may not be true.

My mom never told me to just "get over it". That was not her way. Both my parents did always tell me to "do unto others as I would want them to do to me". I think my mom had more sayings than my dad, and they came from her English upbringing, so most had humor in them. I wasn't expected to do lots of chores, they considered my homework and getting good grades in school my chores. Some of my friends had a long list of daily chores and it was strange to me. I didn't have to take out the garbage or vacuum the house, but I was expected to keep my bedroom and bathroom tidy, and help mom with dishes once in a while. My mom did the laundry for us so I had it pretty easy. I remember fussing one time over cleaning up my bedroom and my mom told me very calmly, but I knew she wasn't kidding. "Until you can afford to go live in a hotel and have a maid pick up after you, go clean your room."
I cleaned my room.

You just reminded me of a saying my dad often used, not sure where he got it from. "We must choose with care the words we speak and keep them soft and sweet, for we never know from day to day the ones we'll have to eat." Not always easy to follow, but great advice!

So many of these saying bring back memories!! My mom had a saying for every single event!! We used to laugh because no matter what..we knew she would quip out some rare gem! Sometimes she would proclaim a saying, we would take a moment to look at each other and then burst out laughing!! One I remember well ... "if it is appropriate, never fear saying you are sorry, but then move on!"

Wow, does that sound familiar. Dad's favorite only he said...."You make your bed....You sleep in it. Mom always said...."A thing worth doing is worth doing well". She made us speak good English....I can remember her saying so many times..."There is no such word as "ain't"!

My brother and I were good kids.....never got a lecture or philosophy. I would get bored a lot and my mom and dad would say...""go outside!"" (even when it was below freezing or 100 degrees)
