GPS in vehicles

Hi. Just bought a new car with GPS. Still figuring out the operation of new features.

Does it make sense that you can't make adjustments to this while driving? I get the safety issue if the driver is distracted by using this feature but what about the passenger/navigator? FYI, my vehicle is a Toyota Avalon. Comments welcome. TIA. LM
