G3, G4, Wi-fi novice has a question

I have a simple cell-don't text, etc. So I am uneducated about all of the network issues.

I am considering the Kin dle Fire or the Nook tablet.

1. Will they connect anywhere? On a cruise in the middle on nowhere?

2. Are they subject to hacking? Is there virus protection available?
