Fresh Express Salad Mix Recall

Fresh Express has recalled its Organic Marketside Spring Mix from Walmart stores in the Southeastern United States after customers found a dead bat in one of the packages.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two customers had eaten some of the product before finding the decomposed creature in a 5-ounce clear container.

On Saturday, Fresh Express issued a recall of the products that were sold in a clear plastic container.

The production code was G089B19 and it had a best-if-used-by-date of April 14 on the front label.

'Upon receiving notification, both Walmart and Fresh Express food safety and rapid response teams, in close coordination with regulatory authorities, acted immediately to review all relevant records, launch an intensive investigation and initiate product removal and recall procedures,' Fresh Express said.

CDC officials said the salads were only distributed to Walmart stores in the Southeast.

The CDC said transmission of rabies by eating a rabid animal is uncommon and the virus doesn't live long outside of the infected animal, but anyone who thinks they may have eaten one of the salads that had animal products should contact their local health departments.

Fresh Express announced a recall of a "limited distribution" of its prepackaged Organic Marketside Spring Mix, after two people from Florida found a bat in one container

Re: Fresh Express Salad Mix Recall

When I read this on Facebook this morning, it just about made me sick to my stomach.

I don't buy the lettuce in the bags anymore. I used to years ago, but not in recent years. A few years ago, or even last year, someone found a mouse in a bag. That right there would stop me from ever buying them again. And now bats. No thanks.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

That is just too awful!

I was in there the other day and looked at those and thought -no, there have been too many recalls of those prewashed greens due to listeria so I got a head of lettuce instead!so Creepy!

Thank you for posting this!

@Say Nay  Not a bad idea.  Watch John Kholer on YouTube.  He grows his produce in his yard...nothing better.  My guess is the bats weren't to happy about ending up in the salad either!

Re: Fresh Express Salad Mix Recall

You know what I first thought when I read the story, even before they released the info that it was a bat? That it was a prank or a hoax pulled by some jerk. I'm still open to that option, especially since you'd expect rodent bits in food, not a bat.
