@aj1980.  Why not charge to park when there are stores like Costco that charge you to shop there while they also make a fat profit?

I find the hospital parking lots to be the absolute worst -

When my husband was hospitalized this past year for quite some time, I started taking the bus.

It was less stressful to let someone else do the driving, and for seventy-five cents each way, much less expensive.

The parking lots were horrendously high, charging per hour.

I understand upkeep / maintenance, etc., but I thought it could be more of a moderate charge.

Hotels have numerous upcharges:  parking, internet access, resort fee.  They charge because they can.  Hotels maximize revenue this way.

@aj1980 Do you have no public transit?  We can & do take light rail or a bus to downtown. Also Uber, Lyft. The privately owned lots always raise the parking prices big time when there's a big event downtown.

Have worked downtown in 2 large cities & everyone took the bus or other transit to work. Too expensive otherwise & sometimes you couldn't even find a parking spot.

My small city took the downtown parking meters out this past year.  The downtown businesses complained to the city that the meters were hurting business.  I guess they have clout.

Today in our capitol city I paid $12 to park at the venue for Disney on Ice.  We crowded all 8 of us in the minivan so we'd only have to pay for one vehicle.  It seems like with the price of tickets the parking should be included.

Owners of parking lots pay for the purchase of the lots, pay taxes, pay for upkeep and repairs, pay for insurance, may pay rent if they don't own the land and often pay for staff to work there or monitor the lot. It's not cheap.

I live in a small town & parking is by permit & the meters are covered for the holiday season.

I worked in NYC all my career & parking costs are horrendous but there is a good subway system as an alternative.

There is a lot of maintenance for garages: staff, benefits, security camera system, probably high insurance. General repairs, inspection's, licenses
