I can't see how sports will happen this year. The mission of the school is academic.
You are both misinformed and naive. Athletics at the University of Michigan generated an excess of $9.748 million in revenue over expenses for the 2016-2017 school year, which is the most current info available (source: Detroit Free Press). Football, on it's own, nearly foots the bill for every other sport at the university (source: an aquaintance in administration at UofM). Even at smaller schools like WMU, some sports, like hockey, generate excess revenue for the school (source: former head coach at WMU).
And if you truly believe that the mission of a Big Ten school, or any other major university is solely academic, I've got some land about 50 miles west of Tampa that I'd like to sell to you.
Sports will happen. Maybe with significantly reduced crowds, but sports are the reason that universities that play D1 are bringing the general student population back.

I think this is wonderful news, especially for those poor families that were economically impacted by COVID! With all of the daily negative reports, it's nice to see some encouraging news😊

MI Insider published UMich projected budgets for 2018 and 2019. The budget is about $185M and they try to have a operating surplus of $2.5. There are always unanticipated in and outs.
UMich makes a lot of $, but it also runs a rich athletic program for all the students. Some people like to hate on the Big Dog, UMich, and accuse it of being greedy.

@SandySparkles Everyone here seems to value the economy over our "freedom."
Today UMich refused to run the presidential debate in Oct. to reduce the chance of Covid spread. Miami accepted hosting the debate.

@FrostyBabe1 thank you!
While we pay college coaches millions each year, adjunct faculty is teaching tomorrow's leaders for peanuts with no hope of tenure.
All is well, come on back to campus! Chase us down later for your refund!
Meanwhile, my boss is ignoring the all is well signal. We'll be working from home until late in the calendar year.
