The only paper utility bill I get is my gas bill even though I also get it e-mailed to me and they can't tell me why I'm still getting it both ways.
Anyhow, I don't save any of my utilities bills and never have. Once they are paid, they are tossed. If I need to prove I paid them, which has never been the case, I can log into my bank account and show the payment.
When I receive them via e-mail, I set them to pay through my bank's bill pay system. Once they are paid, I delete the e-bill.
The only bills I ever did keep pertained to my rental houses and that was only for tax purposes. I no longer have to worry about that.

I keep everything for 1 year and then shred. I keep tax papers for 7 years.

and I am not sure if a copy printed from your computer will be good enough
@jackthebear Not everyone gets a paper bill mailedout to them, a lot of people go paperless and get ebills. If you have to show proof of residency with a utility bill, printing a copy from online is just as good as the one that comes in the mail. Not sureif you have ever seen an ebill or one printed from online, but they look exactly the same as what you are mailed.

If I pay the bill in full, which I almost always do, I shred the bill once it's paid. If for some reason, I have had to make payment arrangements I keep until I have paid the bill in full. I do the same with credit cards. I want to make sure the previous month has been credited to my account.

We keep only the last statement and note date paid, check # and amount.
If there is any issue we keep any and all correspondence until resolved in writing.

@jackthebear I never thought of that!
I still have all the bills snail-mailed but I pay them through the banks bill pay service.
I pay all the bills and if something happened, at least my husband would be able to pay them with a paper check and still have all the modern conveniences available to him.

RE: Receive bill...Open bill...Write check...shred the bill immediately...Mail check the next morning.
@gidgetgh I was with you up to, "Write check," as I haven't written a check to pay a bill in ages. Instead of writing one, I schedule an electronic payment at my bank's website for the date it is due.
@sidsmom My bank does offer shredding services, but I am not sure how regularly or often.

@IamMrsG - and I still prefer to pay them the old fashioned way. Only exception, sometimes, is our Discover bill. When we get it, sometimes I pay it by phone.

@akaburtonfan wrote:We still get paper statements from our gas, electric and cable companies. If you do, how long do you keep the statements after you’ve paid them?
I have been shredding old statements and have started to think that there’s really no reason to keep the past month once I receive the new month and it shows that the balance has been paid. It would be much easier to shred them every month instead of a year at a time.
What do you do?
edited to add I do recycle the shredded paper
I shred immediately after paying.

Some people take pictures or scan their documents and then store them in an electronic file on their computer, an external hard drive or even a small flash drive. Saves paper and eliminates the need to accumulate stacks of paper.
