My DH and I are looking into increasing our annual donations to a variety of causes.  I remember that I used to use a resource online that 'graded' a charity on how the funds were used.

For example, I could see how much was spent on salaries and overhead vs money given to support the cause.

I remember 1 group was spending over 70% of the donations on salaries and board of directors + additional money on consultants.  Almost no money went to victims.

Does any use such a tool or can recommend one?

Thank you.

Forbes magazine has a good article  Per Forbes "When choosing a charity, look for one that dedicates less than 30% of its total costs to administration and fundraising expenses. That way, you can be sure your charity has an eye on maximizing your gift. " The article refers one to Charity Navigator  web site where you  can type in the name of the charity  and GuideStar web site. Links below

What is the full name of the charity vetting service?  I can not find a rating service with purple heart as part of the name.

I've had similar problems @Abrowneyegirl .  I've decid, ed since to just ask around or use charities I know are good, e.g., my furbaby came from Second Chance Rescue NYC so I know how they spend their resources.  Won't give to ASPCA 'cause of their inappropriate spending, imho; however, have donated to an ASPCA in Salem, NH, 'cause they use donations appropriately.  Also realize Goodwill is not a charity but a private business - read that somewhere!

Try this one  it worked for me  .  Charity Watch Top rated charities as it lists  the % actually going to the charity and not as organization expenses .

@eddyandme   I donate clothing and household items to Goodwill because they do hire people who might not qualify for jobs elsewhere, but I have never donated cash to them.

If you are donating goods such as  clothing, old household goods than you might want to check with local Daughters of American revolution  or other local groups. The local DAR in my area has had yard sales  in the past and all the money raised went towards buying a tract wheelchair for Veterans.
