I have been away from skating too since the days of Michelle Kwan. But, thanks for this thread. It has sparked my interest for the Olympics!!

Thank you! Actually I will watch the skating and that's it.

Re: For ice skating enthusiasts . . . they did it again!

This is just one of the many things that has happened over the last 20 odd years that has cost skating a lot of its credibility.

In 1992, Paul Wylie was stuffed out of the gold metal because the Russian was expected to win, and Paul wasn't viewed as "consistent" enough for their taste. He also gave two fabulous performances in the exhibitions (one solo, one with Nancy Kerrigan as they had the same coach).

In 1994, Nancy Kerrigan lost the gold by a teeny margin because of the "artistic" vote. The winning Russian fell on her backside at least once with some more fumbles, and Nancy skated two clean performances.

The vote rigging scandal between the Russian and French judges.

The pros from Dover (former Olympians allowed to compete again after going pro) coming in to take gold, silver and bronze. Everyone that came in 4th, 5th or 6th was stuffed out of a medal in at least two categories.

The Russian pairs winning over the Canadians when the latter skated a far more difficult program and WERE indeed the true winners. Dual medals were then issued.

Evan Lysacek (sp?) doing better than the Russian, but the press gave time to the Russians to say the medal had been stolen from the rightful winner. ARGH!

When I look back over all of this, I can see why so many of the fans have moved on from the sport.

I love skating so much, it's my favorite event!

I think the decision has to be made on who has the best chance to win a medal for the US. Everyone has an "off" night. I don't think it's all about where one ranks in a certain competition. They make the decisions on who to send, based on many other factors.

I want to see the ones who can deal with the pressure. The fumblers tend to fumble again, and if the nationals is too much, the Olympics isn't any better. Just ask Michelle Kwan.

Actually, the same thing CAN be done for selection gymnasts for the Olympics:

The individual all-around champion from the combined two day competition at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials will be automatically qualified to the U.S. Olympic Team. The reamining athletes will be determined by the Selection Committee from among the competitiors at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

I absolutely agree that Michelle Kwan was the best. It broke my heart when she missed out on gold the second time. I loved watching her skate. Not so much with Lipinski or Hughes. I'd also say that Brian Boitano was the best we had, too. He was magic on ice. I miss seeing those beautiful Spread Eagles that he did, along with his incredible Death Drop.

I loved to watch Brian Boitano skate. His passion for skating was one of his strengths. I'd just watch and want him to nail it and show the world his talent. He didn't disappoint! Fabulous skater.

I feel bad for the bronze winner who will not get the nod to go to the olympics. It must be disappointing for her.
