Obviously, there are some posters who mistakenly believe they know everything and must have the last word.

Opinions are formed through understanding details of a situation while assumptions are just guesses based on hearsay. Those who state their opinions well generally give a little background as to how they formed them, while others mask their assumpitons as opinions and usually pay the price by getting unkind responses. So, if you find yourself getting attacked for an "opinion," you should probably make sure you are, indeed, stating an opinion and not making an assumption. It's okay to not respond to every post, particularly if you're not familiar with the subject matter. Sometimes it's okay just to read and learn from others.
You do realize this is your assumption of what people are doing masked as your opinion and a bit condescending as well. Since you have no way of knowing for sure what people are thinking or how much they know.
Actually, it's my opinion based on seeing contributors getting attacked for posting items such as rewriting the dictionary and presenting statistics that are proven false. I cannot give you specific descriptions of these posts, as they were taken down. So, no, I'm not making assumptions, I'm forming opinions based on specific experiences here. I'm not sure where you got the idea that I was asserting that I have some way of knowing for sure what people are thinking or how much they know. I was referring to specific instances where I witnessed contributors providing unfactual information and getting attacked.

As is everyone else.

It might not even be that more things are being deleted lately. Plenty of stuff has always been removed, but you just didn't know it unless you were there when it happened. Now you see the moderators' comments and are made aware of every deletion.

This is obviously not the place to discuss politics, but if you google "political forums", I'm sure you can find the appropriate place to discuss that subject to your heart's content.
As far as people needing to drive a point into the ground or needing to have the last word, I had an epiphany when I learned about that part of our personality called the ego. While the ego can be a beneficial thing, unfortunately, it has an ugly side. I believe once people understand how the ego is at work and its (negative) power, they will be able to get a handle on their own ego and relax in the company of other opinions. Deepak Chopra explains it well. :-)

@colliegirls, you are so right! I usually let them have the last word, not important to me after I have spoken my mind, something I learned a long, long time ago. Last Worders have needs I don't have anymore.

When you criticize people for wanting to have the last word, you are actually implying that you feel that you should be the one to have it. That sounds like self-loathing to me. That's not smart. That's embarassing.

This is not true. It means that when another poster says something you disagree with, but you have already stated your opinion, and especially if you have already interacted with that poster with your opinion, you stop...think twice.... and walk away.
