I was just reading THIS article about food recalls and the numbers caught me by surprise. Just hearing about them one at a time over a few months it never registered just how many there are; a very small number in comparison to the volume produced but still more than one would think. The number of people that become ill from foodborne illnesses (not necessarily from recalled foods) is astounding. Either I am very careful or very lucky to not have gotten ill.

The excerpt that caught my attention:

"However, of the 693 food product recalls between October 2011 and September 2012 - the last available year of records - only about 15 pertained to bagged lettuce or salads, according to FDA data.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that one in six Americans - 48 million people - get sick from foodborne illnesses each year. About 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die."
