The churches each take a night of the week to provide a complete dinner for anyone whether they are poor or just lonely, no questions ask, no forms to sign, no proof of anything.
I am sure many families are so thankful in your community. It is not shameful to be hungry, or to ask for help, you make them feel better not having to prove anything.

We had a neighbor on SNAP. He actually approached us one day. He said if we gave him a list he would buy our groceries for us using SNAP, in return he wanted us to give him cash. We said "sorry, no thank you".

Absolutely. It is a shame that our troops have to live like paupers. Those families give so much to us all.
Members of the military as well as employed civilians (like said NYC police), qualify because they have very large families. Almost anyone can qualify if the family is large enough. Seems to me it would behoove people who have limited earning potential to limit the size of their families. They should not indiscriminately reproduce, then expect the taxpayer to subsidize them. They would not have to depend on handouts if they limited their children to those they could afford to feed. If they live like paupers, it's by choice.

And so he is why others should be punished?

You are not supposed to do that.

I spent more than 30 years working for this govt. agency before retiring. I have heard from previous co-workers that their morale is at an all_time low and that those who are close to retirement are scadadadling out of there as fast as they can because of erratic management rulings. And other management things that I will not go into here. This agency was always a political football. Remember when ketchup was considered a vegetable??

Kachina, do you have a source showing those military families on food stamps all have large families? I find that hard to believe in this day of economic awareness and birth control.
Many veterans are also on food stamps and I assume we're talking about retired people, no pack of little kids swarming around.

@Noel7 wrote:I just read an article this morning that the families of the NYC police can't make ends meet. They don't even earn enough to live where they work and the Mayor is doing nothing to help, even though he promised to.
The police union there is in the middle of a salary negotiating process so the ad that the PBA has taken out focused on the wife of a policer officer with 3 kids who is having trouble making ends meet. Since this is part of the campaign to get public support for their cause, it is probably embellished a little.
I don't doubt that there are police officers all over this country who are underpaid. But I also believe that if you can't afford three kids then you shouldn't have three. Unfortunately we live in a society that says I should get paid more because I can't afford my lifestyle. When I grew up you figured out how much money you were making and that determined what your lifestyle would be until you were able to improve your income level.
@scotnovel ..... I totally agree with you .... every time I see the ad with the wife of the police officer with 3 kids my blood pressure hits the roof!!! .... they should have stopped at 1 kid & they would be able to make ends meet!!! ... she probably will have more kids & expect the rest of us to pay for them ... these people make me sick!!!!

@Noel7 I no longer have access to the charts used to determine poverty level. They defined "family income" and listed the income allowed for the family (defining family member) based on family size. I managed the training and employment component of a program, coordinating with the State department of human services in Texas. Had all all information at my fingertips back then.

1 person gets 194, 2 get 357 and 3 get 511 and so on. Why does a single person get more?
