USofA should be hanging its head in shame!

I just read an article this morning that the families of the NYC police can't make ends meet. They don't even earn enough to live where they work and the Mayor is doing nothing to help, even though he promised to.

I can't speak to other communities, but the food bank in my community does provide a week's worth of groceries including fresh produce. The churches each take a night of the week to provide a complete dinner for anyone whether they are poor or just lonely, no questions ask, no forms to sign, no proof of anything.

Absolutely. It is a shame that our troops have to live like paupers. Those families give so much to us all.

Those are the ones with the most incentive to work steady - to provide for the children they have brought into the world!!

Most states, if not all, have programs that subsidize the child care costs. Of course, parents have to qualify. I met a nurse assistant at doc's office, who told me that she paid ONE Dollar a month to get the subsidized child care.
Edited to add - parent/parents must be working or attending school for a certain amount of hours.

@occasionalrain, same in my community. Also, there is a organization that serves a hot meal once a day, 365 days per year. I have volunteered there.

The police union there is in the middle of a salary negotiating process so the ad that the PBA has taken out focused on the wife of a policer officer with 3 kids who is having trouble making ends meet. Since this is part of the campaign to get public support for their cause, it is probably embellished a little.
I don't doubt that there are police officers all over this country who are underpaid. But I also believe that if you can't afford three kids then you shouldn't have three. Unfortunately we live in a society that says I should get paid more because I can't afford my lifestyle. When I grew up you figured out how much money you were making and that determined what your lifestyle would be until you were able to improve your income level.

What was changing the name of the program supposed to accomplish? Some feel we/us should take care of the whole world.

@willdob3 ITA! I have been hungry at one point in my life and it was awful......in this country NO ONE should go to bed hungry EVER! With all the tax waste.... Just stop even a small bit of where our taxes are wasted and misused and make sure every American citizen or any hungry human being gets a meal. We need to make that a priority. Not cut back services. With all the problems in this country, hunger can be one problem we can fix. There is plenty of food.
