I believe if you go back to the original report it was that college is less expensive here not better or more grads.

The state that ranks number one in higher education degrees is Massachusetts.

Thanks @151949 ! The details are important.
San Francisco just passed a bill to provide free college at SF City College for anyone who has lived in the city for at least a year.
They will still have to buy their own books which can be very expensive.

Books aren't expensive - just buy them used. You get the added benefit that the original owner probably highlighted the important parts so you can just read what was highlighted.

@151949 Of, they sure are out here. Not that bad when DH and I were in undergrad and grad school, but when my daughter was in grad school they were $800 and up a semester.
They could easily cut that to almost nothing by putting textbooks online.

With the scholarship money the state gives to good students, plus the account we started for him from the day he was born, he graduated from college with no debt and a bit of a nest egg. My granddaughter, his younger sister, is attending the same university and will also graduate debt-free. She also got a scholarship for her academic achievement and has the same nest egg that we set up for her when she was born. My grandson got a great job after graduation and I hope my granddaughter will do the same. We come from a family of Ivy Leaguers but I see the advantages of going to a state school, doing well, and graduating debt-free.
I have 4 grandchildren that have done the same thing! I am so proud of all of them for taking advantage of the program.
The full report is on line if anyone wants to read it.
Florida no. 1 in Higher Education
Florida is not all old and decrepit retired people!

Here are the "Most Educated States". Florida is not on the list.

Unfortunately, that is also correct. Many of the persons over 65 today did not have a chance to get a good education!

I'd have to read the entire report to interpret it for myself. I know there are some affordable schools in FL, compared to some places that we think of as educational meccas. I don't know if I would consider it #1. Not to say that it isn't. There's more to a good education than price.

I think that's true for every state and for every age. There are undoubtedly geniuses walking around who can't pay for it or who are working full time supporting a sick parent and young siblings.
I do like the idea that SF will soon offer free college for two years to anyone who has lived here for longer than a year.
