First family issues with Target card

Granddaughter came into town last Monday for a visit during Spring holidays where she teaches, and for a wedding in another state, which she will drive to. Got a call yesterday morning from the fraud department of her bank that her debit card has been cancelled due to someone's attempting to use her account for $65.00 worth of groceries in California. (We're in Louisiana). They couldn't tell her if they have a fraudulent card or how they made this attempt to buy.

She went to the local bank branch this morning to get some cash out - she was planning to use the debit card while traveling this week. She had to have one identifying person and all her id to be able to access her account with a bank check. No new debit card for another week. She has to get some money out of her account and put it on a cash card to use until they can send her another debit card in a week or so. Otherwise, she would have to carry cash until the card arrives. She doesn't have a credit card yet.

Apparently she only uses her debit card at Target near her home in Alabama. Pays cash for gas and other purchases, but does her grocery shopping at a Super Target near her home.

Looks like some fall out from the Target issues is hitting home for us. Good luck to all of you.

Me too! I thought, what in the world could have happened to the Obamas' Target card!?

As for the OP, don't automatically blame Target. The "theft" of her card could have happened anywhere, not just at Target. Thieves electonically steal your data even when your card is in your handbag.

The statement I bolded is only true if you have a card with an RFID chip. None of my credit cards have that chip, and I'm very happy about that.

Thank Goodness, her bank caught the fraud. Did she sign up for the one year of free credit monitoring that Target had offered on their website? I think it's with the LifeLock company.

If you keep your cards in a metal case it won't matter if the are chipped or not. Soon all of them will be chipped.

Re: First family issues with Target card

I thought that Target had identified all the card numbers involved in this hacking and notified the card holders. I know I got a E mail from Target two months ago, advising me that my name, address, phone # and E mail had been captured by the hackers but not my debit or credit cars info since I had not used those cards there during the time frame this occurred in. Did your daughter never get anything from Target??.
