Channel 7 news just had Nicole M on an interview.
She was born in my home town and went to High School down the block.
Her Mother was my manicurist years ago. When I was at the salon and had my Grandson with me, if she happen to be there, they were the same age, they would play together as little kids do.
I didn't know she was Native American. First in space.
She and her parents were born here.
She had wonderful parents that took an interest in her and her sister. Her Mother told me when she was in high school a scout wanted her for her playing soccer. She was a star.
Her parents took interest in what their girls did and drove them to all the practices. They sacrificed a lot. Though the girl worked very hard, the parents were so supportive.
She got a scholarship to Annapolis and the rest is history.
Great American family. An exceptional lady and so happy for her and her parents.
I use to see her mom at the gym, but that was years ago.
I know they are so proud of her, wouldn't anyone be to have a child accomplished so much.

@qvcaddition Nicole Mann was the first Native American WOMAN in space.
When astronaut John Herrington made his voyage to space aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour's STS-113 mission, he became the first Native American in space. An enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation, Herrington carried its flag on his 13-day trip to space, as well as several personal items with him

I knew nothing of an Native American man in space.. Wasn,t something I was following. I was just proud of this hard working family,, I knew and her accomplishments.

Congratulations to Nicole; it's not easy to become an astronaut. I hope she's the first of many.

Such a humble beginning, to rise to the top with support and very hard work.
I,m surprised not to see a banner outside the high school here in town.
It was just in last evening news.
Thank you for the article.

Did I say she was wrong? I am just happy and proud of this family with such humble beginnings.
Parents were devoted parents. Nicole worked very hard to get to where she is today, an honor. Yes, she comes from Native American ancestors. Yes, she is a women. They did not mention her child and husband. They did show a picture of her parents. Vicky, her mother was my manicurist back in the day. That is the Native American side. A very nice family.
This will not be political. I said my piece and done.

@LadyAlice I don't see anyone trying to stir things up at all. Quite the opposite, and certainly nothing sad. It was a joyous, triumphant announcement.
