@AuntG Some CC companies will have your FICO on their site.

Here's a kicker though.  I have a Delta American Express card which I got only becasue we used to go on a ski trip every year and so the fee for the card basically paid for the luggage fees and got us on the first seating group after the slew of folks who needed extra help and their club members, LOL.  A couple of months ago, I got a notice from them that they were raising my interest rate BASED ON MY FICO SCORE OF XXX which was above 800.  They specifically had my FICO score in the letter.  I wanted to call them to find out what FICO score I would need to have to not trigger them to raise my interest rate. Doesn't really matter since I always pay it off every month, but I still think it's ridiculous.

@Icegoddess  guess they don't like those who rarely use their cards, and pay them off promptly.

@AuntG , I guess.  After that I got a notice from them that they had added a statement to my agreement that stated: "You agree to use the Card for personal, family, or household purposes only."

Sheesh.  I guess people were racking up sky miles charging their business expenses.  I had a separate Business Card (no AmEx) for that back when I had business expenese.  I did also use my Costco card for business expenses, but I also had the more expensive Executive Membership for that purpose.

Congrats!  So many variables involved regarding score changes...frustrating.  I watch only to ensure nothing has occurred that could cause damage to credit.  Paying something off, adding a new small debt can alter your rating.  It is what it is, I guess.🤷‍♀️

Its very easy to check your credit score. As previously mentioned,it may be free monthly from your financial institution ( mine is from my credit union and my bank, Wells Fargo). I also signed up for Credit Karma, which is free. I check all three of these weekly, and since our credit is above 800 its also a great feeling.

Paid off my car back in December.  My score is still very good even though my credit card usage is up but I will be paying them off before the end of 2026.  No mortgage either.

Question though what is the benefit of a 800-850 Fico score for older retired adults.  I can see for younger adults that are making those first time large purchases.

When submitting applications to senior apartments for my mother they told me they would be running credit checks on her. I told them she never had a credit card and it had been 60 years since she had a mortgage. They said no senior apartment for mom unless she had a suitably high credit score.

Better to be out of debt than tp worry about what your FICO score is.  People who have never carried much debt have the lowest scores.  The scoring system is based on several factors.  I am sure you can read up on it.

i heard if u call and cancel it, you get dinged.

i am letting my tjmaxx c.c. lapse b/c i don't shop as much and i dislike that u have to pay on-line and no paper bill.  i like my paper!!!

i can see our FICO score on our c.c. app.

i never saw it on our bank statements....

We check our score from AMEX.  I don't do it often, but it's good to know it is available. We have a CareCredit card to help manage paying for implants, and always pay it off before the interest kicks in. So far, it hasn't impacted our score.  I also recently closed out a home equity line of credit at the bank because we hadn't used it in years, and they charge $50 annually to keep it open. I'm curious to see if that will cause our score to dip.  And I don't close out CC cards, I just stop using them so they go dormant. So far it hasn't affected anything....but who knows what else lurks out there!
