The fact that crime is down doesn't mean crime no longer exists.

No intelligent woman leads a full life because of that. Do you walk down the streets of the worst areas, alone, at night? No, none of us do.

Taking intelligent precautions is not something to be ashamed of.

Obviously something bothers the o/p about this trail she's talking about. So just don't go there. Pick a different route where you are more comfortable.

Re: Feeling unsafe when on walks

Pay attention to your thoughts, they can save your life. Mine have on walks and in life in general and when I went against them, disaster. If you are feeling unsafe, don't go there. Two women were killed jogging on a so call safe trail in our area, and I avoid all trails. Too bad in todays world we have to do this, but it's the reality. Doesn't matter whether you have a dog, pepper spray or cell phone. Don't do it if you feel uneasy.

I cannot imagine being afraid to take a walk. How paralyzing.

Re: Feeling unsafe when on walks

I have been followed, had a pit bull jump on me, and a shooting on the trail I walked. We are in a different world than a few years ago. You need to be careful now. The police told me to carry a cell phone and pepper spray after the dog incident. I was walking with my little dog and some kids let the pit bull out of the house and were too afraid to catch him. He actually had his paws around my neck because I had grabbed my dog up from the ground. I was screaming and no one came around until a car stopped and helped me. I was lucky the PB wasn't mad at that time. I found the house he belong and pounded on the door, and called the police when no one answered.

Yes, it is sad today when you have to be on guard taking a walk. This is not a bad neighborhood, just people that don't use common sense anymore.

Re: Feeling unsafe when on walks

Crime isn't down in general/overall and even smaller areas around here. Relatives/friends in smaller, quiet towns have been complaining about sh**tings, and all kinds of mischief going on. Wouldn't be a good idea to walk alone. Also, one never knows if a couple of not-so-nice guys are from out-of-town, might be driving through our town, drunk or not, bored and just looking for trouble...........better to be safe than sorry. Re: Feeling unsafe when on walks

I had a Spangler (large spotted, looked like a cocker spaniel, but not nice), run across the street and actually put his entire mouth/teeth around my ankle. Thank goodness that the owner called out to the dog, and the dog turned around and ran back toward the owner before the dog chomped down on my ankle. 'Anyway'.........what if I were on a trail, a dog ran up to me, biting my ankle, then turned around, running back to his/her owner, and the owner was unaware of the situation. Often times trails are intermingled and are difficult to find folks who need help. Well, all in all, just try to be safe and keep away from isolated areas.

Unfortunately it is not a good idea to just relax enjoy your walk. There have been and still are hundreds of warnings about walking alone (especially women) I don't care if you have a dog and pepper spray, you can still be overtaken by someone bigger and stronger than you are. It is best to buddy up and keep a sharp lookout, after all, it is your life we are talking about.
