Re: Favorite places to eat

[ Edited ]

I'm lucky enough to live near fabulous restaurants .Steakhouses, Seafood,Italian,French,Greek. You name it. DH & I love going out to dinner. However,we do have our favorites.

There is a wonderful pub we frequent about once a week.It has great steaks, seafood & burgers. Every meal comes with unlimited salad served family style & unlimited tap beer, wine or sangria.

Then there is this great Italian restaurant. It's very well known. It's been visited by many politicians & Celebrites.  Their food is fantastic. It's costly so we only eat there once every few months.

We also go to this little French bistro.Their rack of lamb is the best I've ever had.The restaurant is very small & intimate. It only has 15 tables.Reservations need to be made weeks or months in advance. Each meal comes with soup, salad & dessert.

I could go on & on.Our choices are endless!!

My preference is a good (preferably not a chain) ethnic restaurant....Thai, Greek, Mexican & Indian are my favs.  I refuse to eat at Bob Evans/Cracker Barrel type places.  I call those TV dinner restaurants.

We have many fine options here in the Fort Myers area. My go to for a steak is the Longhorn chain. I like Bahama Breeze here and a local Chinese place. DH usually picks where we dine out, sometimes I have input. It's all good.

Mmmmm! What you had for lunch sounds delish. I am totally hungry so this will probably be longer than it really should be. Teehee!

There are several that we go to most often. One is a Thai restaurant near us. It is a family run place not big or fancy at all but they have the most excellent food. The family that runs it is just great and everyone that works there is a family member.  I like it because they have great quality food, prepared wonderfully and it is healthy. That is important for us. We like fresh veggies, lots of them and we want whole foods. Not a bunch of processed garbage. I have never had a Chicken McNugget in my life and I would find that scarier to eat than sweetbread (which I happen to like) We also love spice. I eat a lot off the menu but my favs are koi pla, any types of their curries, green papaya salad (I have had many and this is the absolute best)and this spicy steamed fish dish that is super spicy with lots of veggies.

The other place is a locally family owned sushi and sashimi place. Again, great family, great quality food and excellent chef. He is just the best. Great quality fish. I actually think the majority of sushi restaurants aren't that great, this place does it right. I lived in Japan when I was younger and my dad worked there so I grew accustomed to getting great food that was prepared well.

There is a Mediterranean restaurant that we go to that opened about 4 yrs ago. We loved it and went all the time and told our friends about it. It was literally the only decent Mediterranean restaurant in our town and we were so worried they would close because they had a slow start and weren't busy at all for like the first 8 months. Again, locally owned and only family working here. They could not be nicer. My grandson LOVES them so much. As soon as we walk in they start making our food.  Everything is great but they have the best fattoush, hummus, tabbouleh, kabobs, shawarma, gyros, lamb, etc.. Everything is perfectly seasoned. We had the WORST Mediterranean restaurants here IMO. This place rocks and despite the slow start, they really picked up and just opened a second location. We were so relieved.

We also just  started going to this South American restaurant that is great too. The best arepas I have had in years and that is all they serve and all they need to.

I do like one chain which I am not normally a fan of. It is called Bahama Breeze and they serve Caribbean/Jamaican food. For a chain they are surprisingly good. We do avoid them on the weekends because despite being a restaurant, it has a club atmosphere on the weekends and it gets way too rowdy. So much so that they now have serious security so we totally avoid it then. They have a great vegetarian (except for cheese) sandwich with asparagus, onions, roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers and pepper jack cheese. It is a panini like sandwich. So good. I am so hungry right now.

My husbands fav chain is Ruth Chris. He would eat there every single day if I would go along with it. I mean they are fine but I am not a big steak person. I know they have other things but meh.

I mostly agree, but I do love Cracker Barrel for breakfast. Crispy, thick-cut bacon, and hash brown casserole...Now I'm hungry!

Too funny @StylishLady, I only read the OPs first post and didn't see what you wrote about Bahama Breeze. I like it there too.

Interesting topic.  I love to eat out and divide my dining between family run places, some touristy spots, and even fast food or chains at times.

Sad to say,  but many of my favorite family owned restaurants are now gone. The Japanese restaurant closed when the new Safeway opened up next door, and had a sushi bar.  My favorite pub closed when the older parents wanted to retire and their daughter who worked there, decided to go to nursing school.

Wow @september how in the heck does a decent Japanese restaurant close because of a grocery store sushi bar? SMH. Yuck. There are some better grocery stores I wouldn't mind getting sushi at but Safeway isn't one of them. Sad.

I'm one of the few people on the planet not crazy about pizza.  Hate the grease for one thing.  I found the best pizza at Walmart's deli.  It's got barbecue sauce, pulled pork and cheese on it on a cheese stuffed crust.  Since it's a large pizza and there's just me, I cut it into thirds and just baked 1/3 at a time.

They are for me, @Kachina624 :-)

I don't hate pizza in general, but I never order it by choice except for California Pizza Kitchen and Planet Hollywood's  ultra-thin crispy crusts. I really, really dislike deep dish pizza - hunka-hunka dough with tomato sauce, often not cooked all the way. Sorry, Chicagoans, I didn't grow up with it and it's not my thing, but do enjoy yours ;-)

@Irshgrl31201   I don't understand why people would prefer Safeway sushi to the authentic style, either.  But the couple who owned our local restaurant saw their former customers walking into the new Safeway to shop there.  For some people, fast and cheap is important.

@Annabellethecat66, I need a lunch friend like yours! I have a good friend, but she is having difficulty getting out very often & she has an older husband that she worries about, leaving him alone..seems like everyone I know that is married just want to be with their husband's everyday! I have one, but we aren't joined at the hip, so to speak! We both like some time apart!

When we do go out, it is also to same old, same old spots..seems like the local non-chain places are disappearing, those new quickie pizza places are the rage here in our burg.

we do have a combo diner/ truck stop place my husband likes, but owners recently sold & menu is changing..
