I'm from New England originally, and MacIntoshes are my favorite. They do not keep well, so stores are now giving priority to longer lasting apples but to me the texture and taste are not as fine.

The Mac is deliciously sour/sweet and just a bit soft to the bite. (Squishy after just a few days, and that's not good.)

I can only get them fresh down here on the cusp of Oct.-Nov. I am making do with Jonamacs, which have been available for about a month but are not quite the same--texture a bit blah, but the flavor is pretty good.

I love the tang of Granny Smith's, too, but to me they are unpleasantly hard to bite into. To me a MacIntosh is the taste of fall.

The current craze for pumpkin . . . not so much.

I love Pink Lady and Sweet Tango for eating. Also like Honeycrisp but they are a commitment they are so big!

I don't care for apples but I will eat a Jonathan if I can find them.

I had a green apple tree in my yard for years and my neighbor use to pick the apples and make pies with them. She loved them.

In the fall, as long as it's crisp, I like them all. I love that there is such a variety.

While I think Honey Crisp are delicious, I feel there are others just as good for half the price.

@wismiss I had never heard of the Sweet Tango variety before I read your post. Yesterday I saw them while grocery shopping and bought one to try (only one since they were $2.49/lb and my favorites - honeycrisps - were $1.67/lb! I didn't like it - it was too tangy for me. Mine was also mushy, which wasn't the apple's fault. Even it if had been crisp I wouldn't have like it. I still greatly prefer honeycrisps.
