Re: Fast Food Minimum wage $20 !

Automation can pretty easily replace nearly every worker in a fast-food establishment. I order through an app when I eat out at Burger King. The ordering and paying are done online. My only interaction with a human is them handing me the order at the drive-thru window.

In many cases, hamburgers, chicken, fish, and assorted meat and meatless items are precooked and shipped already cooked and only reheated when ordered. This speeds up order processing and minimizes waste. You can quickly reheat a pre-cooked burger or product, and with it all pre-cooked the risk of food poisoning drops. There are already french fry vending machines. You could pretty easily fully automate a fast-food chain with the only human needed to be someone to come around daily and restock the machines and clean the place. And the cleaning could even be automated. One person could probably service ten stores or more a day. Reheating a burger, applying condiments, and wrapping it aren't the most taxing things automation is asked to do.

For those arguing a degree leads to a better job, talk to the workers in your local Walmart or any other store. You'll find that many have degrees, in some cases advanced degrees. That piece of paper guarantees you nothing. That person in a fast-food place asking if you'd "like fries with that," may very well have a more advanced degree than you do.

Losing our manufacturing base and becoming more of a "service" economy was a mistake. We have way too many people doing little more than shuffling papers, and filling out forms that they then send to someone else to file away or send to someone else. We have a whole lot of people "doing things" but accomplishing nothing.

Hospitals have more administrators than nurses or doctors these days. A Healthline article from 2019 put the ratio at ten administrators to every doctor. It's probably even higher now. Some schools have more administrators than teachers. What do all of those administrators do? Mostly just shuffle papers. Fill out forms and send them to someone else. Bureaucracy is creating jobs, but not really achieving anything. At least in a manufacturing economy people made something.

@Tori3569 Same in hospitality.

This garbage that no one wants to work is just that. People are having difficulty accepting job offers because it makes zero sense to accept one that you cannot afford to live on.

Unless you have a financial partner, retirement income, or family to help you cover the disparity, it's an unsustainable setup for employees and employers alike.

If this were 1983 instead 2023  $20 per hour would almost  be a gift from heaven

Nobody today, in California or many of the other forty-nine states, could live on $20 an hour without a financial partner. It's a great step for kids and seniors who need some pocket money or extra supplemental income though.

@Laura14 But it will be coming out of the pocket of everybody because prices will just go up to match theminimum wage. Which doesn't mean every job should have to be a wage someone could live on.  It just means all of us will live on less.

It seems it’s always OK for me to make more money or for me to get an increase in my Social Security, but the other guy better not make more.

If you want people be able to live on less, there needs to be a fundamental change in the cost of housing, not only rents, but also the market value of your own home. No one wants to hear that.

And that's the only time some don't care if it costs the taxpayer. But free covid tests, affordable housing and free college is a no go,

Re: Fast Food Minimum wage $20 !

I think with inflation, it has hurt everyone. When wages rise so does the cost of an item. I heard that McDonald's big mac would be rising to $18. So this may be killing business. UAW just settled the strike and car prices will also increase about $900.

So, in essence, you give with one hand and take with the other. There is no clear solution until inflation starts to come dowm. I heard the average person is spending an additional $7,000 per year. People are struggling to just get by.

That is one pricey Big Mac.  Made me open my App to see and the sandwich here is still $4.59.  I may need to go buy one tonight before I can no longer afford it.Woman Surprised  My excuse to indulge.  Seriously, I would never pay more than $6.00 for any fast food burger.   My cooking is just fine.

Here in PA, a lot of fast food places pay $20 an hour to start.  They need help that bad.

My granddaughter who started college in the fall made $23 an hour working at a place that sells gas and quick food.  She wanted to save for college money.

Our minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.  No one can live on $7.25 and few people want to work for that wage.

I wish restaurant workers were paid a fair wage and didn't have to beg for tips. They make $2.83 an hour, plus tips.  The public should not be paying their wages.

Too Funy.  I remember the big dispute when they wanted to raise minimum wage - and require restaurants to pay the full amount upfront regardless of tips received -  and the servers opposed it.  Why?  First of all, the law already requires that if tips don't allow them to meet the minimum wage, the restaurant MUST make up the difference.  However, the servers were already making well over the minimum with tips and were concerned that if the minimum wage were raised, people would stop tipping and they'd be making much less.

So now we're up to $20 and no doubt the tip jars are still out at Starbucks etc.  And restuarants still want to charge minimum 20% + gratuities for parties.  And then everyone wonders why business falls off.
