I'd say for SW MI, Dec. for sure.  A few years back, we had very little snow for the whole season.  Less is better in my book.

I live in GA, about an hour north of Atlanta.  It can still be warm, and sometimes hot, in October.  I remember when we moved here 5 years ago and I took my daughter out for Halloween.  We were sweating.  She couldn't wait to get home and tear off that witch costume.  I can get very cold here too.  One winter it snowed and schools were closed for 3 days.  I don't think they're used to it down here.  Ha Ha.  I look forward to the cooler months because it's just so hot and humid most of the time.

@ScrapHappy,  I'm about an hour north of you and I too look forward to the cooler months for the same reason.

Last night we were supposed to start a brief break with temperatures dropping to the mid 50s.  What a disappointment this morning.  Yes, it was in the 50s but not the least bit refreshing.  I'm sure you understand what I mean.

Re: Fall Months

[ Edited ]

Fall is December to January, winter is January to February.  The other 9 months are just hot and humid here in Florida.

I live on Long Island and although the calendar dates say one thing about the seasons, the actual weather says another.

September is usually a very warm month here.  We don't usually feel true fall temps until mid-October.  Even then it can be very sporadic.  There have been many Halloween days when we were outside trick-or-treating either bundled up or in short sleeves and shorts.  You never know which one it will be!

Winter will sometimes arrive here in December (with snow), but the truly cold temps don't come until January.

The weather patterns here seem to have shifted about a month later from what they used to be.

It will be in the 90s this week so it's still summer here.

We had snow in October last year and it went downhill from there. It was a bad winter. The Farmer's Almanac says we're supposed to be colder than usual and receive lots of snow this year. Ugh.

I live in Atlanta. Here, I consider true fall to be November.

Can you see the changes in light and a lowering of humidity before then?  Sure.  But in terms of leaves changing, it's usually early November.

True winter for us usually starts in January.  Though I remember a 17 degree Christmas Day here one year and plenty of 70 degree Christmas days.

Winter can take all the time it needs to get here, in my opinion.  The longer it takes to get here, the faster it's gone.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

I'm in North Central Ohio so all I can say is, it depends. Our weather can change on a dime.  We have had downright hot days in October and we've had 40's on Halloween.  We've had snow flurries in October, sometimes November.  A couple of years ago, I was outside washing my car the day after Thanksgiving because it was so warm and other years we've gotten significant snow on Thanksgiving.

The second weekend of October is always our last camping trip for the year and there have been years where we froze and last year we were in shorts and t-shirts.

Definitely central and southern Ohio have better Fall weather than we have.
