The I.R.S. will first communicate with you via USPS for whatever reason. I received a letter from them asking for additional $1.32 for a tax bill.

No it isn't. No legitimate company is going to contact you for personal information either by the phone or through an e-mail. If you have any doubts, call your bank or CC company and ask if this is how they do business.

As an accountant and tax preparer for more than 35 years, I have had clients come into the office shaking with fear because of phone calls like this. The truth of the matter is the IRS will never ever call you. Same for the Social Security Administration. They also never email.

They communicate by mail only, if you ignore their letters a couple of times they send certified letters. If you need to talk to someone there you must call them and be prepared to be on hold for at least forty five minutes.

Please pass this info on to older relatives as they are the ones that usually fall for this scam.

The IRS is aware of this scam and there is information about it on the IRS website IRS.gov.
