There are nights where I don't fall asleep until 4 or 5 in the morning. No big deal since I don't have to get up for work. I just go with it. No drugs for me.

I'm sorry you have continuing problems. I know it is hard to sleep when your mind is going around and around. Somehow I hope you find an exercise that can help you shut down those thoughts so you can sleep. You have been hurting for a long time RRR and I wish I could help you. I keep you in my thoughts and wish you well.

I have a permanent delayed sleep disorder. I can go 9-11 days without any sleep, then I sleep for maybe an hour or two in the afternoon. I NEVER COMPLAIN. I have three serious, eventually fatal, health problems unrelated to my sleep disorder, all causing me severe pain. I NEVER COMPLAIN. Who would want to be around me if I did ? No one else can feel it or experience it but me . Why burden others ? I try to make the best of my life with God's help.
I really get tired of people constantly complaining about things that they can and should do something about, particularly when it involves changing their thinking, attitude, behavior, view on things, etc.
We can ALL make our lives about as happy as we want them to be. In this day of information, resources, and help of all kind, no one should have a sour outlook unless it suits their purpose. Many do use it to garner attention and sympathy. It's a shame, for God has given each of us so much, to not utilize it is an insult to our Creator.

I so understand your situation ! This is what I do, but after I rest my body for a while, I get back up and do "quiet" things while my household is sleeping. I read, watch TV, or mostly get on my computer and tour the world or study something interesting or even come here. Whatever delights me ! It really takes my mind off of pain and makes time go by until I can sleep ! there is a whole world at my fingertips via computer, just like in reading books !!!
I am truly sorry you can't sleep. I know those wee early hours seem long . If you aren't in pain be grateful. They say your body will sleep when it has to, no matter what. So if you just can't sleep, whatever the reason, as long as you aren't suffering pain, just go with the flow. You are blessed that you don't have to get up and go to work. But the experts have all told me that if you don't fall asleep in 15-18 minutes, you won't. And don't lie there trying to, it makes everything worse. They suggest you get back up and do something quiet, like reading, sewing, needlework, crossword puzzles, or play on your computer until you unwind more.
Oh, and nothing with caffeine after 7:00 p.m. nightly, no foods after 9:00 p.m., and if you bathe at night do it two hours before your regular bedtime.
I offer you this advice I received from the nation's top leading sleep experts at the top hospital and medical expert's east of the Mississippi. Believe me, in 28 year's I have been seen by the best !
Don't watch or read anything that would alarm you or upset you. Stay away from subjects that would be emotional for you, even if they are good emotions, if they would get you hyper-excited and very overjoyed at night !!!
The brain doesn't know the difference between bad stress and good stress when it needs to shoot out an overdose of epinephrine, the flight or fight hormone. Like too much caffeine, don't want to get you jazzed up too much !!!
I hope you can eventually get better rest. I do understand your problem, really I do.
I'll pray that you can find ways to start falling to sleep earlier and rest better .
Blessings !

Thanks for the tips, Qlady. Thankfully, though, it doesn't happen all that often; maybe a few times a month. And no pain involved. So, like I said, I just go with it. If I need to, I can usually take a nap the next day. It's just not enough of an issue for me to even want to get started on sleeping pills. I'd rather be sleepless a few nights than become dependent upon meds.

Dear Sushismom,
I meant to tell you that I think you are VERY wise to not go the route of pills as long as you possibly can. I don't take anything either, but an over-the-counter Melatonin that my physician insisted I take. I refuse pain meds for now, because I know what's in my somewhat near future and it isn't pretty.
I have family, and don't want to stress them at this point. It will be heck on them later as is.
I did say a pray for you, and am delighted to find that your problem isn't as often as it could be
. And I think it's sort of fun sometimes if you can sneak a nap in the afternoon, especially in the fall and winter when it's chilly and you can snuggle under a warm and cozy blanket ! One of life's little pleasures, even better if you have a cracklin' fire !!
Sorry if I overdosed you on my doctor's advice, just threw some stuff out there in case you were at wit's end ! Glad to know you aren't at that point !!
Hopefully I'll see you around at times, if so, please stop and say "Hi" and let me know how you are doing. I love making new friends here !! ![]()
I'm usually on here more over the graveyard shift, but sometimes during the day.
Take care, and pleasant resting !
Blessings
QLady

I wake up most nights for a few hours - then go back to sleep. It is my pattern- I'm posting from a mobile device. No biggie for me.
