Since cataract surgery I no longer need glasses... but for many many years prior to Cataract surgery, I bought my glasses from Vista Optical inside my local Fred Meyers. The styles and frames were great to choose from... the service very nice and fast. I always got two pairs of glasses as they offered such a great deal on them. I would highly recommend them over any eye doctors office where you are paying a very high overhead charge on frames.

The one drawback to going to a "big box store" is the lack of choice of lenses. Even the optical chains Cohens and Lenscrafters don't dispense my lens.
I can only get them at local independent optometrists.

@nana59 I haven't (yet!), but one of my coworkers gets her glasses/eye exams at Walmart and is happy with them. She's gotten some really cute frames there!

I’ve also had cataract surgery and don’t need glasses anymore but when I did I had to go to an optician and I could not use the big box chains or places in the mall because my eyes were so bad I needed a prescription that they could not handle. My guy told me the big box stores offer lenses for the people who need glasses but they don’t do special prescriptions. Every time I did use the big box places (before my eyes got bad) the lenses did not go a year before they were scratched and when I did go to a more expensive place my lenses never scratched. I think there is a difference in the quality. If you are like I was and needed glasses 24/7 it was what I had to pay.

Well, I have bought mine at the optical shop inside the local walmart, as well as every optical store in this town, which I guess is about 4 at this point.
My husand had a weird eye thing happen several months ago and we had to go to a much bigger city to him to see an eye surgeon. This office also had an optical shop.
I had just had an eye exam in our town, and I ended up buying a pair of glasses there. By the time dh's eye got back to "normal", he needed new glasses.
All in all we each got a pair of new bifocals and each a pair of rx sunglasses. It was all under 500.00 with insurance.
The last time he got glasses in this little town, it was over 500.00 for just one pair.
It pays to shop around.

I am interested in what people think on this. I have gone to a Nationwide place with an opthamologist for years. I spend between 5-600 on glasses depending on whether I get a new frame or re-use one I have. I have double vision for distance but dont need the prism to correct it up close for reading. I have progressive bifocal lenses. I dont want to spend this much when my glasses are on a side table much of the day when I am reading.

@dulwich I am way past due to get my eyes checked. When I do I will definitely get the glasses at Costco.
I have always bought my glasses there; as did my late husband and my 2 daughters.
Come back and let us know how it worked out. You might be able to help other's if you had good results.
