Received some sad news this a.m. a very close friend of ours died. I called to U.K. to speak to wife of deceased and she then said ‘Gray (now deceased) asked that you pick a hymn to be played at his service’ . All of us, me DH and Gray and wife very close pals for years but this completely floored me. No time to ponder.
All I could think of was ‘All things bright & beautiful’ which the two of us used to sing walking our horses every a.m. and p.m. for a lot of years. DH and my deceased friend’s wife thought we were crazy but the horses liked it! They walked horses too but never sang. Great friends, great memories.
Wondered what any of you Ladies could come up with on spur of moment request from close friend.

The song you picked sounds perfect. Sorry for your loss.

I think you made a great and meaningful choice.
Sad for your loss. We lost the male of our couples foursome a few years ago.
A hard loss, lots of good, treasured memories.

You reminded me of something. When my husband died his former business partner made a beautiful video of pictures set to music (popular music).
Music was very important to my husband and myself. We danced all through our marriage and met at a dance. So, my daughters (3 of them) picked out music that reminded of songs they'd sing with their Dad (we'd sing in the car, everywhere).
So, (finally my point). It cane up "Hey There Little Red Riding Hood".....and it was mainly my husband with our youngest daughter throughout the years.
I don't know if you know the words to it but it's not really something that solemn (come to think of it none of the music was).
The music was upbeat and happy. We were celebrating my husband life, that's what my family does....(i.e. wake).
I didn't think much about it. Later, a few business people (like bankers, etc.) that didn't really know him or us, came up to me and said they thought the music was an interesting choice.
When I told our friend later everyone laughed and said clearly they didn't know my husband very well because he'd have loved it.

@dulwich Condolences on the loss of a dear friend. Yes, that was an unexpected and awkward moment. (I imagine grief was taking over during the conversation.) Your choice of music seems appropriate.

When I taught 8 year olds I had an African American student ask me why some Santas were white (Caucasian) and some were black (her words).
This little girl believed in Santa and I wasnt going to be the one to burst her bubble.
Thinking fast I told her Santa could change because he was magic and he didnt want to frighten children, so he would look like whatever the children wanted.
Her parents came to me and thanked e for my fast thinking since they enjoyed being Santa for a little longer.

@dulwich I am sorry for the occasion, but the song you chose was so appropriate and special.
Yes, I have occasionally been asked a rude and inappropriate question that floored me. I ignore the question and gently change the subject. In your situation the question was a beautiful gesture, you followed your heart and did exactly the right thing.
