I learned something new:

 

A pilot from the Suez Canal boards each ship to

help manuever/guide the vessel through the canal.

 

I guess I always thought it was the boat captain

and regular crew doing the navigating. 

 

It makes sense.

The name seems pecular, especially for a Japanese ship. Actually, it's odd for any ship.
