A couple years ago I was diagnosed with mild epilepsy. I had fallen at my Woman's Club meeting and was out for a few seconds. When I first spoke I didn't make much sense and everyone thought I had a TIA. They wanted to call an ambulance but I told them no, that this has happened to me for most of my life. My body even knew what to do when I fell, because I never hurt myself.
My daughter insisted that I go to the Dr., so she took me to my Dr. the next day. After a week of tests he concluded I had mild epilepsy. I was a little shocked at this, because I had mentioned it a few times with previous Dr's., and it never became an issue with them.
I now take trazadone one in the morning and one in the evening. I have gone from having 3 or 4 falls a month to none since I started taking the medication.
My family just thought I was clumsy. Sometimes I would stare into space and I got into a lot of trouble in school for day dreaming.
I did well in school but I was very shy. Some of the kids, especially in high school thought it weird that I would just fall in the hallway or in the class room. And they laughed at me when I went into my little daze and the teacher was trying to get my attention.
My husband knew about this little problem I had, and he took it in stride. He never made me feel bad and he was the one that insisted I tell the Drs about my situation. They just thought I was fatigued, or maybe they thought I drank. I talk about my cocktails on this board for fun but I rarely drink.
I also think that when I was in my twenties and thirties a lot of Drs didn't take women's aliments very seriously. I couldn't count the times a Dr would tell me I was just stressed from being a young mother and I needed to take time out for myself. Yeah like that was going to happen with 3 children under 7 and a husband who just started a new business.
I just wondered if any of you have had an experience similar to this regarding a health condition you had when you were younger. I do know that the Drs I am dealing with now seem to encourage you to be more proactive about your health than when I was younger.
