I think people trying to pass off a dog as a true service dog should be fined -- it is going to make it more and more difficult for those who really do have a service dog.

I agree. I once had a lady come into the shelter with a very poorly groomed yorkie who looked like he was not well care for at all. Animal Services tried to get a court order to remove the dog and the lady claimed he was her therapy dog. I asked her for her certification papers and of course she had none. To be certified and wear the true vest, it takes thousands of dollars in training, not just someone claiming their dog is their service animal.

I have worked in a hospital. I have volunteered in a hospital. I've seen "Service Dogs" and "Therapy Dogs" at work. They are patient, well-behaved, and friendly to the utmost. They are a marvel. They are wonderful. They are indispensable to patients. Sick children immediately perk up when the "Therapy Dog" comes on the unit. Floor staff love them, too.

And yes, there are "Emotional Support Service Dogs". They have proven to be invaluable to servicemen suffering from PTSD and other traumatic injuries. They seem to be able to offer the owner a respite from his problems. I've seen a couple of reports on TV.

I've seen "Service Dogs" in a variety of public places. They are close to their owner. They only move when the owner moves. Otherwise, they'll lay down and wait for their owner to move. They are allowed EVERYWHERE by law and rightfully so.

Why would someone sell a vest that looks like a "Service Dog" vest? The buck, I guess. The poster children for reprehensible businessmen.

Why would someone buy a vest for their dog to impersonate a "Service Dog"? Self-centered. Self-absorbed. Little if any values and morals. Reprehensible people.

You answered your own question.

why would people take grandma's handicapped sticker when she passes away and use it for themselves? There are people who do unethical things every day and it makes it tougher on all those who do follow the rules. Someone always comes up with a "global" type of law that punishes everyone because of the few who deliberately abuse the system.

I had heard about this -- but saw one at a restaurant yesterday. It barked and wandered all around the owner. A friend was with me. She sent me a link last night that took me to a website selling the vest the dog was wearing.

Why are people doing this?

Hi PD,

I am not understanding your question. What exactly does "doing this" mean?

They're doing it so they can take their dogs into inappropriate places like restaurants and grocery stores.

Re: Emotional Support Service Dogs???

The person i know who did this - her dog is not well housebroken so he can't be left in the house alone - even in a crate - he will lift his leg and pee out the side of the crate - so she did this as a way of taking him everywhere she goes. So now there is a not housebroken dog in restaurants, offices (she tried to take him in the doctor's office but they said absolutely no way) and in the grocery store. She took him in the library and he peed on the bottom shelf on some books - she had to pay to replace all of them AND clean up the mess. She even took him to the dentist with her and insisted on holding him on her lap. IMO - anyone who has to do this is crazy with a capital C.

She needs to cover the crate with a tarp, so when the dog lifts his leg, he ends up showering himself. That will stop the behavior very quickly.

The breeder/handler who had my dog for the first year and a half of his life used that method to make him truly crate trained.

OR - she could stop being so lazy and properly housebreak the dog - who apparently is smarter than his owner .

Crate training IS a step in housebreaking.

Belly bands work wonders on male dogs who insist on doing their business inside.
