Durable equipment companies sell canes and they are COVERED BY MEDICARE.  There are many sizes and some have adjustable heights.

I wonder if the elderly  don't know this?

Re: Elderly In Need: Senior Giving Trees

I love this idea and I'm going to Walgreens tomorrow (senior day everything is 20% off-first Tues every month!) so thank you for telling us.

Most drug stores have very nice canes and most can be adjusted for height.

I think the best kind are the ones with the 3 prongs at the bottom so they can stand on their own.

Re: Elderly In Need: Senior Giving Trees

@Noel7,

   I haven’t noticed that at my local CVS but something similar at work.  The Salvation Army puts Angel trees out for our employees to select a tag with a child’s wish-list, aged from toddlers to teenagers.  I noticed a few years ago that they had added a few senior tags.  Like you, I was taken aback when I read what the seniors were asking for, all just simple, basic needs like “a warm sweater” or “new socks” or “new slippers”.  Nothing else on their list; just one, simple item.

   It melted my heart reading those tags as they were the opposite of the kid’s lists that were asking for iPads, cell phones, laptops and huge televisions.  So many of those big-ticket items were being requested by kids as young as five years old.  So that’s when I started taking a couple of the senior tags instead of the kid tags.  Mind you, I am not a Scrooge and I know Christmas should be fun and special for the kids, especially the little kids.  But it seems to me that someone asking for a “warm sweater” is in greater need than someone asking for an iPad.

  Thanks for your post.  I think it was heart-warming!  Happy Holidays!

All of the Walgreens around here carry canes, and yes, many are adjustable for height.  I think that the canes at a drugstore cost less than those at medical supply stores - but the ones I've seen at Walgreens seem very sturdy.

@Carmie If you are buying a cane to give to someone else (the needy senior), Medicare is not going to pay for it.

Thank you for your post!  It's beautiful.  I've seen family giving trees and those for kids, but never seniors.  I agree, so simple and so touching.

Maybe some are seniors but not eligible for Medicare yet, or they lost their cane. Or even undocumented.  There are numerous older people in this city who are Asian and live alone, some do not speak English. Possibilities.

Rite Aid has really nice canes.

I think they are the best drug store for all kinds of medical stuff-feet, wrists, back etc., etc.

Thank you for mentioning that, I didn't know there was a senior day at Walgreens.

Yes, I already know that.  I think someone at the pharmacy should help the elderly get a cane via Medicare.  It doesn't make sense to ask for something that is covered by insurance.  These poor folks are doing without and they don't have to.
