I haven't had any problems and I upgraded to El Capitan the day it was released.

I have never used iCloud. I personally use
Dropbox which is so much simpler to use & best of all it's FREE for the first 5GB of storage which is all I need. I use my computers for fun & never business.

I had no problems that I noticed after upgrading to El Capitan. I waited several weeks before I upgraded. Seems issues started arising after I installed the recommended update Apple put out. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed it may be that the track pad needs cleaning, however the timing seems too coincidental.
I'm am lucky in a sense compared to others. I basically use my machine for email and the internet and have few photos stored. While I have some files I would hate to lose, nothing earth shattering.
I am going to do a back up as soon as I figure the best route to go, I don't want to get involved with iCloud. We use a Click Free for our PCs. I think they may have one out now that can back up Apple Products. We'll head to the the Apple Section of Best Buy and see what they have. I also will call the Apple Store and see what they recommend.
I'm hanging in, but have so many questions that I would drive everyone here crazy. I just appreciate everyone has been so kind.
I too was using a Click Free, but it is very old. I bought a new backup drive at a good price on Amazon. The company is Seagate, and i have to say, they contacted me immediately when I sent a message to them. The genius bar guy installed it for me because there was one step I wasn't sure about. As I understand it, you HAVE to have an auxiliary drive for time machine to back things up properly.

Update: I don't want to jinx this, but so far things seem to be resolved. I can now shut down the correct way. My keyboard is back after I validated every single font one at a time and removed any that had error messages. I am really hoping I will not have to schlepp this machine back to the Genius bar again. My friend had a new issue today with his email. It kept asking for a sign in, and when he signed in, it wouldn't accept his password. This had never happened before El Capitan. It seems there are a myriad of problems depending on what other software is on individual machines.

I'm having some issues typing. Can you tell me how you validated every single font (please be very explicit I am technically challenged). While I am not sure this will assist with my issues I still like to give it a try. Thanks.

I finally updated my MacBook Pro to El Capitian. I was reluctant to download Yosemite. I know too many people who had big problems. I was waiting for the issues to be resolved and then El Capitian came out.
The computer paused during the 1st download process 3X but each time I was able to un-paused.
Then gray screen appeared for 2 hours - it took more than 31 minutes indicted on the screen for the actual download process of El Capitian. (I am assuming this ....).
I started to read the feedback/comments on the Apple APP's page but stopped. I knew this update was necessary. I put my big girl panties on and got on with it.
I will admit - the speed has picked up.
Good luck - and thanks for everyone for adding their two cents and offering hope to those with problems. I have a tablet and Kindle but I always chose my MacBook Pro.

We've been told at work that we have to delete some software before upgrading to El Capitain. The tech support staff is updating each computer individually to ensure all steps are followed correctly.
My MacBook crashed (spinning beachball that freezes everything up), so they thought El Capitain might help. They updated all software, but it crashed to the point it won't turn back on. It's been in the shop for a week, so I'm without a computer again. If this had been a personal purchase, I'd been at the Apple Store months ago demanding a replacement because this has to be a lemon given all the problems I've had since day one.

Well, I'd like to tell you that it fixed the problem, but that lasted for a few days and then I started having keyboard problems again. I'm still having them intermittently. However, do a file find for Font Book. A huge list of your fonts comes up. Do not do just English fonts because that won't tell you if there are any errors elsewhere. Highlight each font, one at a time, go to file menu and scroll down to Validate Font. Once you validate a list of validations will show up. If there is a yellow mark near any of them, that means there are problems. I deleted any that had the yellow warning. It's time consuming, but in some cses it works. In my case, I still think it's either a bad blue tooth keyboard, or most likely it's the evil el Capitan OS.

I've schlepped mine to the Apple Store twice, and one problem was solved, but not all of them. The problem with intermittent keyboards is they have to be not working while you're at the store. Who can guarantee that. I'm also getting strange messages now from my Time Machine. This computer is only 5 months old.
