If you are thawing in cold water, it has to be in the wrapper. I've been thawing salmon in the wrapper in cold water for years. I take out of wrapper if defrosting in the fridge but you cannot put meat or fish in water without it being covered. Rastelli has suggested the cold water method for quick thawing.

My house is pretty chilly (we like it that way) so I leave it on the counter in the plastic sealed wrapper it came in until it is just starting to soften and then put in the frig. I've done this for all 3 or 4 auto ships that I've had when I decide I want salmon the in the morning for that evening. ALWAYS DELICIOUS!
Just wanted to mention, they specifically say to remove from wrapper before thawing and it says on the instructions.
You are not suppose to thaw it in the plastic wrapper ! It is a health risk!!
'thawing it in its package can risk botulism, a dangerous bacterium. Always remove the packaging before thawing.'
@RespectLife the only part that sticks out in my mind is put in cold water still in the plastic .
why would plastic cause a health risk ? I have thawed meat in my frrezer saver bags many many times and so far no issue?

Just to clarify....that is not my opinion.....it has been stated almost every time by the vendor rep, it IS printed right on the product AND it is a fact easily found online.
The green statement above is from an online site regarding food safety.
I also have partially thawed in cold water.....but once I am done I remove the plastic.
I have tasted raw meat, licked products w/ raw eggs, eaten raw cookie dough, still here...I get it.
I just wanted to point out this fact that the vendor states this warning all the time and it is an online warning all over the place.

@Kitty Galore In my experience thawing it in cold water is pretty fast. About an hour or less, depending on how cold the water is.

@Catch71 So have I, but I just checked and it does say to remove the salmon from the wrapping. It makes o sense. The salmon is already in the wrapping when it's frozen so there should be a health risk period frozen or thawed,

The vendor also endorses placing in cold water for a fast thaw, which is what I do. This will thaw the salmon in about 15 minutes. You must keep in plastic while it is in the water. I imagine the problem with safety is once it is defrosted since plastic is used by every vendor for frozen food.
