People are just getting too lazy to cook, or just don't know how!! With all the "cooking" shows, and cookware being sold, what are they doing with it?
DH and I love cooking, and don't even care to go out for production kitchen, warmed up meals. That's what is being serviced at a lot of these chain places. No thanks! Some of the local family owned restaurants are better choices IMO!
"people are getting too lazy to cook" seems like an overly broad generalization.
Do you realize a lot of people work and simply don't have the time to prepare more than a sandwich or soup in the evening?
You don't have to go to a chain restaurant to eat out. I prefer local places and my taste runs to ethnic foods, which would be cost-prohibitive for me as a single person to prepare every day.
I cook some days and I go out some days.
It's so easy sometimes to fire off an accusation when you only have your own life to compare. It is always good to consider other people may have different lifestyles than you.
I don't know about anyone else, but I still cook for my family. We eat out very little each month and we all prefer the home cooking which I don't ever intend to give up or lose my touch in the kitchen. To each his own though but don't you dare mess with my kitchen, lol.
I'm not sure where you got that I've lost my touch in the kitchen?
I do a lot of entertaining and I prepare everything I serve for my parties myself. I simply don't feel the need to do it every day. I eat little meat these days and find I do not need a big meal every day.
To each her own.
I believe you read this wrong. I was referring to myself. MY TOUCH.

I think I have too, MGM.
I look for unusual recipes and I experiment a lot more than my mom ever did. She was cooking for a family of six and she didn't have some of the interesting ingredients we have now.
I look for all types of recipes too. I love Asian ..Korean, Thai, Japanese, Indian. My mother liked all types of foods, Jewish foods were her favorite.
We had a large family too, meals in one pot or roaster were her best.
I LOVE to go to the different market stands or specialty stores featuring exotic herbs and veggies.

It's okay Azterry, I sometimes do the same thing especially after a long week, lol.

My DH and I used to go out a lot when we were younger. We lived in a big city and it was fun. Now, we have a son...the prices are high at restaurants...and we can make virtually anything we want at home/restaurant quality for half the price. It's fun for us to make meals at home. My son helps too. Tomorrow we are making Moroccan chicken stew... ![]()

We usually do take-out more than eating out but when we do we love pho and my kids love the family who runs our favorite place to get it. It's a small family place and very casual.

I eat out 3 to 4 times a week, and I always order water. Cheap? Nope, I just refuse to pay that much for something that cost them 10 cents. A lifetime of ordering drinks at restaurants is a car later in life. I'd rather have the car.
A few days ago there was a thread up about the minimum wage, and someone had said how much easier it was to afford things in the 70s on one salary. Besides the fact that we have more stuff than ever, and that it can cost more than ever, restaurant eating was something I mentioned as being a factor. People now proudly say that they burn water, and they won't cook. It all adds up.

I think that the increasing amount of people eating out contributes to the very sad obesity epidemic in this country, especially among kids. ![]()

The cost of eating at home varies wildly and depends on what you eat. We don't eat junk food, don't eat prepared things, and don't eat the easy cheap food that is a lot of people buy at the grocery store. Good pieces of meat and fresh veggies and fruit are expensive and there is a margin of waste to them too. We also hardly ever drink when eating out. We eat at good restaurants, hardly ever at a chain (unless it is bbq then it is local "chains" with maybe four restaurants). So for us, there is a lot more of an even playing field between eating out and eating at home. It depends on how we feel at the end of the day.
