Re: Eating 'Dangerous' Foods

Hot dogs are not my problem but homemade ice cream in the summer is my downfall.

Re: Eating 'Dangerous' Foods

I have not had a hot dog since June 11, 2016. I was on a keto diet at the time, so I ate two minus the bun. Throughout the evening, I felt strange but figured it was indigestion. At 5 in the morning, I had a heart attack. Have not had a hot dog since.

My aunt and uncle ate hot dogs, sausages and bacon and lived to be 101 and 102 respectively. I am adopted so have a different genetic background. I saw my adoptive dad pack away a six pack of beer, ice cream daily growing up and he lived to be 91. But for those of us affected by what we eat, what choice do we have but to refrain from eating

Oh my, Trinity11, yours is a cautionary tale!  I'm glad you are doing well now.

Hot dogs are not that important in our diets, thank heavens.  They are a desire that sometimes wells up in some of us.  Hearing your story gives me pause, though.

I really think it has more to do with genetics than anything else @golding76 . As a Type 1 diabetic for fifty years, I really believe that was the catalyst. I highly doubt one hot dog 🌭a year is going to harm the average, healthy person.

@golding76

Once in a blue moon my friends and I will go to a special hot dog place..... If you eat them once in awhile I dont see the harm....

I dont think all these studies are even accurate there could be numerous reasons for a decline in life span---it could be genetics, it could be an underlying health issue or a combination of health factors.....Or perhaps its side effects from prescription drugs that cause problems...

Remember when coffee drinkers were given the "death sentence" but now its deemed safe in low to moderate amounts.....Then there were eggs which were  considered bad.......Now they say up to 3 eggs per day is perfectly safe for people that dont have any serious health conditions, and for 70% of people there is no increase in total or LDL cholesterol and eggs contain Vitamin D, B12, selenium, carotenoids and other nutrients....My rule---EVERYTHING IN MODERATION!

Re: Eating 'Dangerous' Foods

@golding76 For the most part, I believe it is what we do 99% of the time when it comes to diet.  But then there is @Trinity11 's story.....a heart attack after one hot dog.  With our country's current challenges, I do everything possible to keep my family's immune system strong. A strong body helps promote a strong calm mind.  So, no we don't eat hot dogs and we wouldn't even if was considered healthy due to ethical reasons.

Re: Eating 'Dangerous' Foods

Am from NY and did hear about 1 hot dogs talking 35 minutes off your life , how did they come to the 35 minutes .My first thought was of the Nathan's Coney Island Hot Dog contest every 4 th of July ,and the amount that they consume in so little time.Same guy seems to win each year ,only time will tell if this fact  is true.

But know my husband  is nearing 80 and has eaten plenty of hot dogs when told him he just laughed and said been eating them since I was a kid .

Just like don't eat too much red meat ,then eggs then margarine, then can tuna, then cold cuts, then soda, then coffee which now I hear they are saying coffee now is good for the heart , probably could go on & on the list.

Re: Eating 'Dangerous' Foods

I have made it to the age of nearly 66, and do not give a second thought to any of the studies or advice on what is bad for me.

I grew up on a farm where Grandpa was extremely heavy handed with bug dust and insecticide, and sometimes we just forgot to wash the grapes, apples, or strawberries before we ate them.   When Grandpa was spraying the orchard with malathion, we could smell the spray long before we ever saw him carrying the sprayer - - and our house was nearly 1/4 of a mile away!

I'm not sure I can even count to the number that covers how many hot dogs, pounds of pork, beef, slices of bacon, cans of Spam, pounds of white sugar, etc., that my body has processed.   I also know I'm not going to worry about it, nor change my eating habits at this stage of my life.

I firmly believe my days on this earth were determined long before I ever tasted food.
