That report is wonderful!   In no time the little guys will be running around the nest!  Those feet.  Wow, they seem to grow fast!!!  I found it interesting they like the colder weather. I wasn't paying attention to the weather, but did it heat up?  I can see if it gets over 70, their aerie is high up, must get warm....and sitting in nest a lot too. Soon they will be off teaching the kids how to hunt. Wonder what they start with?  Small running prey or fish?

Ten day highs on TWC show it'll be in the 50s and low 60s in Big Bear.

I don't know how the parents work with teaching a little one to hunt.  I wonder if there will be a How To Catch Worms class?   lol

@Tinkrbl44   I can tell you this much, I won't be watching when they give the hunting for bunnies and squirrel lesson. lol. My friend who lives in Reno, about 30 mins from California, says the Eagle she watches that has lived near by, brought his kid to her back fence to try to swoop the bunny she had living near her yard. Didn't get the bunny that she saw, bunny just never came back , as I am sure her property was marked a danger zone after that, lol.  Bunny's down the block now.

Chick Naming Contest is On!

Everyone is invited to help name Jackie and Shadow’s two eaglets! The contest to name them is online and waiting for you. Since we provide the livestreams of Jackie and Shadow’s nest cameras always free to the public (and free from advertisements), we have traditionally asked for a small donation along with chick name suggestions. To participate, you can go to our website homepage www. friendofbigbearvalley .org.

The contest will be open for one week, so you have until 11:59 pm on Friday, March 28 to enter name suggestions. After entries close, a computer will randomly draw a finalist list of names.

We will deliver ballots with that list to the Big Bear Valley elementary schools for a final vote on April 1. Historically the final name selection has belonged to Big Bear’s 3rd grade students, since they study bald eagles during that school year. But this year the 4th and 5th graders will be invited to vote, as well.

Since Jackie and Shadow did not have chicks the past two seasons, we thought it would be nice for the students who were in 3rd grade those two years to participate in the naming process this time. Jackie and Shadow and their family are very important and special to the local community.

We are soliciting names for only the two surviving chicks, since the oldest eaglet, known as Chick 1, passed away during the recent snowstorm. We will be naming that chick ‘Misty,’ in honor of a very dedicated FOBBV volunteer Kathi Misterly who was lost to cancer and is still very missed. 

Thank you all for your beautiful dedication to Jackie and Shadow and their family. Best of luck in having your favorite name selected!

Nice. We have an eagles nest not too far from my house. I stopped by to see if I could be lucky enough to capture a shot when I drove by but nobody home.  We do have a falcon cam and one egg laid the other day.    Its fun to watch them.

I haven't watched for a couple days and just looked.  Mama (?) just returned.  Kids are napping, but they are HUGE!

Peaceful pals…

…sometimes. 

Yesterday Jackie and Shadow’s fast-growing chicks had a very large breakfast with both of them sitting side-by-side, peacefully taking giant chunks of food from Mama Jackie. Since they now have better eyesight and better balance, they can focus more fully on their parents and the food they are offering. That seemed to make it easier for Jackie to distribute the bites equally.

Both chicks were apparently hungry and ready to scarf down everything she offered. They were so huddled together they even had their little wings around each other at times.

With all that food for energy building, the chicks are growing and developing quickly. Later in the day, the Bigger Chick had several adorable short bursts of wingersizing, while the Smaller Chick focused on sitting and balancing. The small one’s feet have also started their growth spurt, though not yet quite as clown-looking as the big one’s feet have become.

But the small one is working to catch up and later had its own little wingersizing show. Ironically, when they do have short bonking sessions, it is usually the small one who starts it…and then quickly cowers when the big one responds. For this moment, they are little pals, expressing their companionship.

Both chicks are growing and developing fast, as they must. They are now about 2 weeks old—14 days for the smaller one, 18 days for the bigger one. They must be full grown and ready to fly in 10 to 14 weeks from when they hatched. In that time, they grow from a few inches to 3 feet tall and from their tiny, adorable wings to an over 6-foot wingspan (or over 7 if they are female). Plus, they will grow all their waterproof feathers, learn to eat on their own, and much more.

Thank you for enjoying these adorable bundles of expanding fluff as the miracle of life grows them into awesome, majestic adult bald eagles!
