Re: ELIZABETHAN MYSTERY DEATH

Your theory could very well be right, @Imaoldhippie !   Were you swayed the most by the fact that she insisted that those around her leave the house and go to the fair, on that fateful day?

Another thing is that it was rumored that she was ill, and I remember reading something about her possibly having cancer, but not sure if that was definitive.

If she were not well, in pain, and in distress generally about her marriage, and being left alone in the country most of the time--  those are other factors that could point toward her taking her own life.

Fascinating to contemplate, and sad.

Re: ELIZABETHAN MYSTERY DEATH

@Oznell ..............Yes a lot of my theory was based on her sending everyone else in the house away and her obviously loveless marriage.  Plus add if she was in ill health all of them together is very convincing.

@Oznell Based on your recommendation in another thread, after much searching, I finally obtained a copy of:

I'm just beginning the book & very much enjoy Elizabeth Jenkins' writing style.

I'll remember to look for mention of Amye Robsart and Robert Dudley.

@Oznell Thank you!

@alliswell  If you haven't ever tried it, Thriftbooks website is a great place to find books, and a lot of them are very inexpensive. I'm a voracious reader, and this site helps keep me supplied at a reasonable price. Their used books are graded by condition, but honestly, I've found even those graded "Acceptable"--lowest grade--to be in pretty good shape.

They also have a fairly minimal amount for free shipping--maybe $15. You can also earn points toward a free book.

I just ordered "Elizabeth the Great" there, along with 3 other books for under $20. All paperbacks.

Her half sister had cancer not Elizabeth. It's believed that 'Bloody Mary' had ovarian cancer and that's why she thought she was pregnant twice, but, when she never gave birth either time , then, the bloated abdomen was assumed to be cancer.

Elizabeth did have small pox which left her disfigured some what. She was a very vain (like me LOL) woman and took to wearing that horrible white mask which later was found to be mercury, maybe arsenic and other what we know now to be cancer causing materials.

Those 2 movies based on her life I bought and pretty well factual. Starring Cate Blanchett.

Seems like Elizabeth just died from like pneumonia , some kind of respiratory lung thing and she was fairly old. Back then the medical world was horrible no antibiotics, they bled you all the time, half the time they killed the patient with their 'help'.  No sanitation whatsoever to dispose of bodily functions, just chamber pots that the servants had to mess with by throwing out the windows. Wonder anybody survived.

@alliswell @sugar plum You are more than welcome! Hope the site works for you as well as it has for me. I've even found out of print books there to replace some copies I've worn out (I re-read books a lot!).

Re: ELIZABETHAN MYSTERY DEATH

Great tip about Thriftbooks, @vermint ,  thank you!

@SharkE ,   the illness/cancer rumor I was referring to was about Amye, not Elizabeth.   How accurate it was, I don't know-- it may have gained currency, at the time, partly because of her long stays in the country.
