Legend has it that if you eat grapes on New Years Day you will have good luck through out the year. Be sure to buy some grapes and good luck to you for 2014.

I don't have grapes right now, but I ate some Morella/Morello cherries (in jar, Trader Joe's). Hope it works!

The first footer, I'm very familiar with. That tradition is prominently followed in Ireland, as a part of which one expects a tall, dark, handsome man to arrive first on the threshold on the New Year's Day. It is believed to be a symbol of good luck in the coming year. However, a blonde, or a red haired female first arriving on the threshold is considered to be a sign of grief and bad luck for the coming year.
There is another tradition followed by some young unmarried women, who put a little bit of mistletoe under their pillow before they sleep on New Year's Eve. This is done with a belief that they will be conferred with a true lover in the coming year.
Then there are the dips, which are organized around the waters of either the Irish Sea or Atlantic Ocean. People go through ice cold waters with short swims.
There is also a tradition of cleansing the house well before the New Year Day arrives, as doing so is believed to bring good luck in the coming year.
I observe none of these traditions, as I consider "luck" to be "blessings" that aren't earned, but bestowed by grace. I generally attend church services, if available, then toast the New Year with family and friends over a good meal---no black-eyed peas for me, please. Yuck! Love viewing all the fireworks displays around the world on TV.
A Happy and Healthy New Year to all! ~ Slainté!
As usual, really informative post, Delaney. Particularly agree with your last paragraph about "luck" actually be "blessings" that are given by the grace of God. May everyone have a blessed New Year, hoping for good things for all here.
