E-Bay sellers--a quick question

I am contemplating the listing of some items on e-bay. How do you determine shipping costs? Do they have a way to decide that when you list the item(s), or do you, as the seller, determine what it is? I've seen sometimes "calculate", what does that mean? I don't want to start listing something and then not know how to do this part of it.
