Re: Drivers: Do They Understand How Their Headlights Funct

I think automatic headlights should be a standard feature on a new car.

For the past 20 years, I've driven cars that had the headlights automatically turn on at dusk or in tunnels and they turned off when I turned off the ignition.  DH recently purchased a car (2015 model) that gets great gas mileage, has a back up camera, and Bluetooth to connect our phones to the stereo, but it doesn't have automatic lights.  If I forget to turn off the lights when I pull into the garage, there is no warning beeper to remind me to turn off the lights.  I can't believe it has so many techie features but it doesn't turn the headlights on and off.  Honestly, I'd rather have the automatic lights than these other gadgets.  Since we had it on cars we've been driving since the 90s, I thought automatic headlights were a standard feature.  I think they should be!

@wildcat fan - I'm surprised that any model car that new doesn't have lights that turn off automatically.  I know some cars, the lights stay on for several minutes after you shut off the engine (my truck does that), so that you have visibility say, if you're walking across your yard.  Then they shut off.

What model car does he have that doesn't shut the lights off?  Especially with no alarm sound to warn you.  Seems strange.

(ETA:  Just wanted to say that my sister-in-law thought her lights wouldn't shut off either, when she first purchased a new car, and it turned out it had this system.  Would've helped, if she'd read the manual!)

I'm amazed at the many cars I meet that don't have their headlights on in the conditions you mentioned.  It's one of my pet peeves as well.  I usually flash them (not personally.....with my headlights....LOL!).

You might get better results if you did it personally!! LOL

That really made me laugh!

When we were teaching our kids to drive, I said in inclement weather (fog, rain) you turn on your lights not so you can see but so people can see you.

Thanks,justjazzmom. Hoping others will take up suggestion. Little disappointed that no one expressed that they would check their driving habits and knowledge of their car dials. Maybe it sparked some insight.😔

@akaburtonfan

Agreed. The lights on my SUV automatically come on when I start it and go off when I turn the engine off. There is a sensor that makes the lights brighter as it gets darker outside. Mine has (what I refer to as) a "dumb" switch on the dashboard. You can move the position to lights on park and full on, but the switch doesnt really work...it is just there.

Anytime I drive a different vehicle (renting one while on vacation or a loaner when mine is being serviced) I have to remind myself to turn lights on and off.

@Twins Mom - LOL.  Maybe some of us didn't express that we would check our driving habits and knowledge of our car dials because we already know exactly how our car lights work and use them properly.

I'm very familiar with my vehicles and I always use my lights appropriately for the conditions.  I even do some of my own mechanical and maintenance work, so I don't feel I need a refresher course!  Woman Frustrated

Understood, Venezia. Guess I was selfishly hoping that someone might have snd express an "ah, ha" moment to let us concerned and frustrated drivers know that our concerns had not gone expressed for nothing. Guess I just want to make a positive difference.
