Re: Dr Phil on the view 3/16/2020

Why would anyone listen to this quack?

Dr Phil is not a licensed Doctor.

He should sit down and keep his his mouth shut.  He is not an authority on anything.

There is one thing about this airborne droplet thing that particularly concerns me, and I’ve heard it from medical experts as well as read it a few times.  They state that the droplets can remain in the air for 3-4 hours.  So if I were to walk into a place an hour after an infected person has coughed, I could be infected by breathing in those droplets.

Hi @shoesnbags!  Without looking it up, I think most of what I have read is that they have gone back and researched other coronaviruses, and the virus of SARS.  That is where that information is coming from. I don't know that to date, we have specific information about this novel 2019 coronavirus yet.  We are too early into the pandemic right now really.

At any rate, other coronaviruses could hang in the air for a couple of hours before settling to the ground.  But I don't think anyone has really researched whether the virus that has been suspended for that amount of time is still as infective as within the few 30 minutes or so of being shed.  Just because it is there doesn't mean it is still able to infect, reproduce, and cause disease.  But we don't know that it isn't either.

What we do know with viruses that are transmitted via respiratory droplet is that the highest risk is close exposure with the infected person & pretty close exposure to close  surfaces on which the respiratory droplet might land.   And as I said previously, the troubling factor with this disease is that people are more infective before they start to show symptoms.

In all honesty, we are so far behind the curve on testing here, we just don't know a lot about how it is behaving here.  That is why testing is so important.  Not just to identify people that are infected, but epidemiologists then start looking at the characteristics of the virus and then can advise based on the character of transmission that is occurring. We do have data from China, South Korea, and quite a bit is coming out of Italy....but we don't have a lot of data for ourselves.  So we have to rely on data that has come from other countries and what their epidemiologists determined.

You are such a wealth of knowledge and  information. Thank you for sharing your area of expertise with us.  I really do appreciate it.

Geez, thanks @magicmoodz! I am kinda nerdy about this, but I have been doing it and teaching it for a long time.  Kinda hard to take this kind of stuff out of me and I totally believe in teaching and people learning what they need to know.  And I have been very fortunate that I learned from and worked with some of the very best public health officials over that time.

@pitdakota  Your students are very fortunate as are we! Your presence on this board is much needed as we wade through these scary times. Getting answers from a professional lessens anxiety as we know what we are dealing with. Again, I sincerely thank you.

They had abc's female health correspondence with them at the table no one corrected him but they kept trying to interrupt him. They were all sitting  about 6 feet apart.  Dr phil is supposed to have a special on the virus tomorrow

In watching GMA this morning they said 80,000 have recovered (why this isn't said more I don't know) and they have given two patients this new trial they have and have recovered from it.  That at least sounds promising.

https://www.nationalreview.com/the-morning-jolt/yes-coronavirus-is-worse-than-the-flu/

The length of time it lasts on the surface depends on factors such as temperature and the type of surface, for example at around 37C (98F), it can survive for two to three days on glass, fabric, metal, plastic or paper.

. On January 22, an infected passenger boarded a fully booked long-distance coach and settled down on the second row from the back. He stayed on the bus for four hours and the windows remained closed.

Reviewing security camera footage, the researchers found the passenger did not interact with anyone else. The person next to him was not infected, but he did infect two people behind him, one person three rows ahead of him, four people who were six to seven rows ahead of him, and one person who got on the bus after the initial passenger disembarked.

Re: Dr Phil on the view 3/16/2020

I have no medical training, but what I see here with his statement is that by telling people it isn't airborne, it leads people to believe that as long as they don't touch things and put their hands in their faces, they will be just fine.

And according to the real experts, you can pick this up from droplets in the air. So I don't know the actual specific definition of airborne vs contact but the bottom line is that he is giving people a false sense of security and a reason to not follow the CDC guidelines about space and distance, and self quarantining.

Irresponsible on his part, in my opinion.

Re: Dr Phil on the view 3/16/2020

I have seen them say over and over that it is airborne, yet it can live on surfaces up to three days. Cover your mouth and wipe all surfaces.
