Maybe it's because I have a nice dollar store, but I haven't had any problems with their merchandise. I think people get the idea that a brand name is better, so they pay the extra $$ for Bounty, Reyolds wrap, etc. I buy cleaning supplies there, as well as paper towels (don't find them thin at all), aluminum foil, plasticware and -- yes-- some food items.
Maybe other people look down on these stores, but that's being caught up in advertising hype. There are some places where it doesn't matter if the price is right.

LOTS of food at dollar stores and Aldi's and places like that come from China. If I go to one I spend a LOT of time reading boxes and cans. Those fruits in glass jars, at least the ones I've seen, are all from China. They are beautiful. . .

My small town has One walmart - one Bealls - one swim shop - one dry cleaner - one car dealer .... you get the idea. BUT we have for some strange reason - 3 dollar stores. I like to use AWESOME to clean, and the awesome oxiwash to add to my wash and get things brighter white. I buy candles there and pens & note pads and almost all my cards like birthday cards I send.I wouldn't buy foods but my church does buy there in bulk for the food bank, mostly cereal and they even give us a better price than $1 a box. When we are in Pa the only store I can run out to for a quick item like soap or paper towels or bandaids or so is a dollar store so we go there more often than when we are at home.

@KYToby wrote:I find it amusing that people will turn their noses up at the food sold in dollar stores (even brand names) but will then stampede into Aldi or Trader Joe's to buy private label generic food.
An issue with the food at the dollar stores is that the packages are not filled. for instance - the size of cereal box that contains 11 oz in the grocery store only has 7 oz at the dollar store. You have to read the labels.

Much of the food sold in all grocery stores comes from China now.

A few months ago I was in a Dollar Store for the first time with my daughter. I bought four very nice drinking glasses and some other items but the best buy were the light bulbs. I use three way bulbs in all of my lamps and getting them for a dollar apiece was amazing. I expected them to burn out quickly but they are still going strong and at a dollar apiece compared to almost four dollars apiece I'll stick with the Dollar Store.
The next time we go I am going to stock up on pens, writing pads and all of my office supplies. I honestly couldn't believe the items I could buy for a dollar each, I'm hooked.

This is not true. I look at the labels. Some name brand name candy comes from there, some apple juice..

The only things I buy there are greeting cards, gift bags, gift tissue paper and aluminum throw away pans.
The kitchen trash bags aren't bad, I keep a back up box under the sink.
The gift wrap from there is so thin that the corners of the box pokes through by the time you are finished and you have torn corners.
I won't buy food, beauty products (not even if they are a national name brand) or cleaning products there. I feel the cleaning products don't work and you might as well just throw the dollar in the street.
I've found quite a few brand name cleaning products at our Dollar Tree over the years.
And I have bought food, brands that are national and available everywhere, when they end up being cheaper than the other stores. As long as the dates are good, it is the same thing on the shelf somewhere else.
Don't venture into unknown brands there too often, though.
They have great toothbrushes (always keep spares for guests), the national brand toothpaste we use, cheap calculators for in the purse, scotch tape, gift bags and wrap. Some of the wrap I've gotten there in years past is so thick and heavy. Most of the more recent is not as good, but occasionally there will be some that is.
But I have to agree with OP, that some products are just a waste, as they don't perform like a better brand, and require the use of so much more.

I usually hit them about once a week just like the grocery store. Get all my cleaning products and BC Headache powders ect.... there. I have bought candy, chips, and spices, as well as canned goods. Never had a problem on any food item just check expiration dates. I have found items there not found at reg. grocery stores. I have never purchased any of their freezer/fridge items.
I do not buy the $1.00 paper towels since that is an absolute waste.
