I had an assistant who was saving up for a home.

She and her husband ONLY ate food from the Dollar store. Lots of pasta and sauce.

She did this for 365 days - and stopped after they had their new home!

I have several dollar stores in my area and am a pretty savvy shopper, so I get great deals.   It's also fun to walk in and know you can afford anything in the store!  LOL

My latest find was a product called Fresh Drop ... and it's a generic of Poo-Pourri!   It's very effective in the you know where.  lol

Maybe these will help some who are new to dollar stores:

Many seniors (and all ages) love to buy cookies there.  And they all look pretty happy/healthy to me.  I like their fig-filled cookies.  Actually, as far as big name brands, who knows where the various ingredients originated, anyway.  I used to buy the dollar store jams and jellies and real fruit slices (peaches, pears, etc.) in the cute jars (from Poland, as I recall), but haven't seen them lately.  Actually, reading these posts, I'm in the mood for a visit!  'There's always something'...........

A new Dollar General store just opened within 6 miles of my house.  I send so many cards every month, and love their selection.  I also buy detergent, peroxide (pour it on my toothbrush every day to kill germs), band aids, night light bulbs, and quite a few food items, such as bread, Kentucky Legend ham, green peppers, cool whip, pepperoncini, as well as the cheap cinnamon and vanilla I use in my stovetop simmer pot to add moisture and scent to my home.

Dollar General isn't really a $1 dollar store, but it has good prices. I have tried many of their brand-name products, and they all have been pretty good. (except the nutri-grain bars)

Thank goodness they sell food, staples etc. I am sure for low income families these stores help feed many.  Big lots also has wonderful prices on food for those on a tight budget.

Oh, I forgot to mention:  Sometimes (not always), in the automotive aisle, you can find those automobile windshield reflectors.  They aren't as stiff as others, yet they do work quite well.  I'm now thinking that we can glue/adhere some sort of thin cardboard or something similar to use as a backing so they won't be as pliable.

I find it amusing that people will turn their noses up at the food sold in dollar stores (even brand names) but will then stampede into Aldi or Trader Joe's to buy private label generic food.

Not sure what you mean in this instance, but Trader Joe's food isn't really generic.  Most of it is food you can't find elsewhere.

And as far as I know, TJoe's food is not made in China, which, reportedly, some food from dollar stores is.

Hi @Noel7,

We regulary shop at the Dollar Tree stores in our area.

They do carry national name brand store brands in their stores.

Some of the stores also have refrigerated coolers and freezers that also have name-brand national brands in them, in what I would call dollar-sized amounts.

What I mean by that is that you can get like a 7 oz. smoked sausage or a half of a pound of lunchmeat, whereas in a market you can get twice the size for more money.

I have not personally seen any Chinese-made foods in the Dollar Tree stores. From what I have seen, it's many nationally recognizably known food brands. Smiley Happy

I have gotten gift bags and writing pads in the dollar store.  I also bought candy (for the movies).  I hope it was the real deal (it tasted like the real thing).

Last year I bought a few Christmas bulbs to use in a display I made.

I won't buy other food items or drugstore type items there.

Hi Toppers Smiley Happy

That's good to hear!  There's only one Dollar Store around here that I know of, it's outside the edge of the city.  It says it's a dollar store, but I don't know if that's the same group you know.

I've been in there a couple of times and found some cute things for decoration, but they do carry food that comes from China.  Some looks as if it's American until you read past the name.  Beauty products from China, also.

I got a small pair of foo dogs there which I use when I put up an Asian theme.  They're really nice, too.  Amazing for the price.  I think I paid two dollars each and they look just like cinnabar.

Hi @Noel7,

I understand what you mean.

I have been in some of the independent dollar stores, that carry many different international items and brands from all over.

I was in one that was very nice that was in a mall but I don't think that it is around anymore. It had all kinds of items in it.
