Re: Dog Lovers: Breed Discussion

I LOVE this thread and enjoyed reading about everyone's kidlets! I grew up with Cocker Spaniels but during the 20+ yrs of our marriage we have had the bigger ones: German Shepherd, Doberman, Collie, and Labs. Right now we have a 2 1/2 yr old terrier mix (a rescue) and an 18-mon-old black Lab. They are best buddies and "play fight" as well! We love them dearly, and they are SO funny! Who needs TV?! Thanks for posting this great thread: looking forward to reading more!

We are collie people all the way. Rough collies, not border ones.

Funny story: Once when we were at the vet, a little girl was there with her mom and their sheltie. She came up to our collie (official AKC "extra large" size, BTW) and said, "Your dog looks like my dog but a lot bigger. Is it a sheltie too?"

DH said to her as he invited her to pet our collie (she could have ridden him!), "no, he's sort of a supersize sheltie. He's a collie."

She ran over on the waiting room breed chart ASAP and found the collies. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin} Then she begged her mom for a collie, and her mom said, "I don't think they'll even fit in our car, honey!"

What a cute story!! Thanks for sharing!! Our black Lab is....a tank: she is about 90 lbs and when she jumps up to put her front feet on my shoulders, we are eye-to-eye! (I am 5 feet tall) She has about knocked me flat on more than one occasion! In fact, last spring she broke my toe after pouncing on me from afar!

That IS a tank for a lab. Our collie at his peak was 140 lbs., all muscle. Thank goodness he never pounced on any of us! My sister had a Great Dane so big that when she stood on her hind legs, she could see out of those little windows at the top of her front door!

We have a 90 pound golden retriever. He is such a good boy. He has cancer so don't know how long we will have him. My sister lab that has a quarter griffin is almost 100 pounds.

You know she doesn't mean to; it was just that Lab exuberance, LOL, combined with her adoration for you.

Dogs are enthusiastic, but Labs are truly exuberant. {#emotions_dlg.wub}

Re: Dog Lovers: Breed Discussion

I hear a lot of good things about the Cavalier King Charles breed. Oh, I saw THE MOST BEAUTIFUL dog the other day at the vet's! I was there picking up medicine when I saw this light buff-brown labradoodle! I'd never seen one in person, and I shamelessly asked the receptionist if I could go see it! It was in an examining room, it didn't appear to be sick, so we went in there and it was just the cutest thing........it's legs were perfectly straight, up-and-down. It's coat was kinky and felt so good. It had been mixed with a standard poodle, so it was pretty big! Everybody was having a fit over it.

I hear a lot of different opinions about the doodle mixes but this was adorable!

Re: Dog Lovers: Breed Discussion

We had a Dachshund and a Beagle when I was a kid. Years later after I had my son I got my first German Shepherd and fell in love with the breed. I love their intelligence, loyalty to the family and the security they provide. We are now on our 4th & 5th GSD's. This is the first time that we had two at once so it's a different experience for us. All of our dogs have been big and loving but these two are going to be the largest ones. Each one has his/her own personality and likes which I find very interesting. They have all been wonderful family members.
