I would think the doctor that actually said he was qualified for the procedure would be the one to contact - not necessarily the hospital. Surely, he has an office number where he can be reached.

Something obviously has changed...

The doctor has a person who coordinates the procedures (she's the liaison, the go-between, between me and the doctor) , just like UC Davis had a coordinator. I've been calling and calling the coordinator. Hasn't called me back since August.

From how it sounds, this doctor agrees with the others who feel the procedure is too risky. He must have rethought his position and is stonewalling you. If it has been since August, I think they are no longer interested. I am sorry about your dad being sick.

That's what I'm thinking too, but it would be nice if they had the balls to call us and tell us that, instead of giving us the silent treatment.

Oh you definitely deserved a response way before now. How about sending a certified letter requesting a reply?

Re: Does your Dr office return your calls?

Yuban3, I too am sorry for your father's predicament. At this point, I'd say the problem is with your father's personal doctor. If he has made repeated phone calls and has not received an answer, he needs to try to find your father another surgeon.

Shorty, is surgery an alternative?

Oh, I agree with you but it sounds like the doctor doesn't want to talk to you. He probably feels foolish that he agreed to the surgery, so he figured that by not replying, you will get the message. Any doctor who agreed in August to do the surgery and seven months later has not returned your calls is telling you indirectly he isn't going to do it...

Re: Does your Dr office return your calls?

I am going through this right now.

I was in the hospital last week and the new meds they have me on, won't allow the pain meds I was taking to work. I am in agony right now between my knees and back.

My rheumatologist's office is not calling me back, and it's ticking me off. All I want are new meds and some answers.

Ugh!

Pain Mgmt Clinics that I have worked with never will prescribe any med changes based on a phone call even if they know you and you are an established patient.

They pay a lot for the privilege of being licensed as a Pain Mgmt MD but they also have a ton of paperwork requirements to be able to do so including justifying the way they dispense.

I am surprised any MD will prescribe additional or stronger pain medication over the phone like that even as a temp med as they too will have to justify the use and how can they do that based on a phone call and not an exam? Established patient or not.

States are cracking down on dispensing of pain meds especially without an office call to justify the med/change.

I would of called the Pain MD and insisted on a emergency appt. They have to wade thru the multitude of medication seeking patients and determine who is legit and who is seeking, not insinuating nothing about you but the others out there that cause things to operate this way which is why I would insist on appt asap to be evaluated and discuss med changes.

More so if the pain level was that bad, I would of gone to the ER for evaluation. It is best to be evaluated in a case like this..you need to figure out what is going on now that is causing additional pain. ER's can do CT Scans - MRI immediately to rule out any additional serious problems.

Again not giving anybody a hard time as you cannot tell tone here.

Yes you are right about the script protocol and all and I did call the pain team and hit the prompt for the girl (like I was scheduling an apt) and insisted to talk to a human, and they kept hooking me to voice mail. I knew they wouldn't give me a script but I thought they would push up my appointment or something.

About the family Dr prescribing. She knows me for years and has copies of my 8 MRIs showing spine issues and history. She knows I have been ambulanced due to my back and how bad it is. And I see the fam Dr all the time because of my blood pressure etc. I see my pain team all the time too (every month or every other month).

The scripts she prescribed are only temporary until I get in at a new pain Dr. But yes you are correct in what you stated. I think she made a temporary exception due to my history.

As far as the ER I have gone to the ER 3 or 4 times for my back. Because I am a chronic pain patient they give me an xray (even though I have 8 MRIs of my spine) and a shot of demoral and send me home and the demoral wears off till we get home (because the hospital is 45 mins away) and that's how bad my back is that it wears off. I would go if it wasn't like that but due to people walking in the ER trying to get meds (and Im not one of them), I have to pay for others by them kind of not trusting me being Im a chronic pain patient. In conclusion I just hope the new pain team will help me and thank you for your reply.

I would keep pressing 0 ..until you got a live body! They would be so sick of my calling they would give me an appt to get me off the phone.

Keep calling..you have a right to be seen and early too.... Maybe if you can get an appt they can kick your meds up a notch ..or prescribe additional amount so you can have an extra dose or two a day..I know it stinks that due to the behaviors of some ...true chronic pain people suffer.

Let us know what they/you eventually do..

Re: Does your Dr office return your calls?

Sorry this is so long....but may be worth reading.

I work for a medical answering service and we get calls from patients ALL the time with the same complaint.

We don't answer for the offices until late in the day....typically after 4 or 5p. Each office will call us and tell us a.) Dr ______ is on call. Reach us on the private line for stats only...or b.) Dr.______ is on call and he can be reached on cell (bp or text) for stats only.

Most offices will put their phones on service and continue to see patients. If they don't work like that they will NEVER get out of the office.

Most doctors will return patient calls that were made during the day AFTER they are done seeing patients.....UNLESS it is a life/death situation. Think of it like this......if you were a patient sitting in an exam room, would YOU want the doctor to stop what he's doing with you every 5 minutes to take a call during your exam? No. That's why they make non emergent calls when they are done seeing their patients.

Many times we will get a call from a patient with your same complaint right after the phones go on service. We will tell the patient to give it a little more time and if they don't hear from the doctor within the hour to please call us back......99% of the time they don't call back because the dr. has called them back.

Just some friendly advice when you call your doctor after hours.

1. Don't call at 10p and tell us you need to spk to the doctor because you have been sick all day. Call before 5p.

2. When you call the answering service we don't need your life history....give us your doctor's name, your name, phone # and the reason you are calling at that moment. Don't tell you "don't feel well" or "I am sick". Be specific...."I have chest pain for 20 minutes.....I have pain in my head and my BP is 140/92......My daughter has a fever of 104 and won't go down after meds"......etc.

3. If you need an Rx refill.....call during the day. Most doctor offices will NOT do refills after office hours. Call your pharmacy....most pharmacies will give you enough meds to hold you over till the office re-opens. (unless it is a controlled substance). If they don't and it's a critical med call....we'll figure something out to get around the rules. SOME doctors will do refills after OH....but it's still best to be pro-active and get your refills BEFORE you run out of meds.

4. IF you are looking for a controlled substance.....MOST doctors will NOT prescribe after hours anyway.

5. IF you need meds for any reason....have your pharmacy # available when the operator asks you for it, and make sure they are open when you will need to get there. Don't give us a number of a pharm that is closed (or closing soon) and then call back and tell us the dr called your Rx in, but the pharmacy is closed and you need him/her to call another pharm.

6. Don't get pis sed at the answering service. WE are following the instructions given to us by the doctor or his office. We can't do you a "favor". We work for the doctor, not you.

7. Don't call for stupid reasons. IE: I have a runny nose, what can I take? That is something that can wait till OH. Also, if you have a true emergency.....IE: I have chest pain, SOB, and pain going down my left arm.....GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. The doctor can not treat you over the phone. If you feel you need to spk with your doctor...have someone call for you while you're on your way to the ER.

8. Most of our doctors get your message via text. We tell all of our patients to call back within 30 minutes if they don't hear from the doctor. There is a reason why we say this....because when we send a text, there is NO way of us knowing if the doctor ever got the message. In addition...doctors are human too and require sleep....they may not hear the text tone. Don't think that the dr just doesn't want to call you back.

9.) We do not work in your doctor's office. We are off site and do not have your medical records in front of us. Also, our service answers for more than 400 separate dr offices...not just your doctor.

10.) Don't call for test results after hours(unless your dr specifically tells you to)....the doctor doesn't bring them home with him and many offices still don't have EMR's (electronic medical records)....and YOUR doctor may not be on call that night.

11.) If you call and YOUR doctor is not on call (one of the other drs in the group is or it's a covering doctor) don't give us a hard time when we tell you that we can't reach YOUR doctor..only the one on call.

Hope this all helped....his is just general information.....you know your body best.....if you think you have an emergency......CALL YOUR MD or go to your nearest ER.

Shorty.....This was not directed at you....it was for everyone reading.

I hope your dr calls you back and that you have some relief soon.

Re: Does your Dr office return your calls?

I email my Dr. directly and he always answered by the end of the day or that day depending on time I email. I have Kaiser. I can look up all my test on their secure line, e mail Dr. and health questions answered, make my own appointment to fit my time and day schedule and order my meds. Good service.

I have heard that Kaiser Insurance is very good insurance. Isn't it hospital generated?

Re: Does your Dr office return your calls?

(((Lotus))) that is extremely helpful information for all of us, thank you! I had no idea an answering service even manages hundreds of doctors! Stupid me thought an answering service might handle 10 or so. {#emotions_dlg.blink}

LOTS of really good info you listed, thank you for taking the time to do that.

You're welcome MJ. Smile

Also, please remember that there are exceptions to every rule and each office has their own set of rules.
