Re: Does Medicare cover walkers?

In my mom's later years the slightest bump into the wall turned into a massive ugly dark purple bruise and her skin was paper thin. Age, health history - it's not the same as when you are young and disease-free.

Some walkers are too heavy, too light, too whatever for a patient. They are not one-size-fits-all. I agree you need to know how to use it properly, like crutches or a cane.

I think they do if the doctor puts in the order for one. Don't they advertise something like that on television, along with scooters and diabetic testing equipment?

Yes. Although walkers are not very expensive.

I was annoyed that I bought one for my mother and then the AL facility got her one thru Medicare that was actually not as nice as the one I'd bought. Mine cost less than $100. The one they got her - which did not have a seat - was over twice that. So I believe Medicare is getting ripped off.

Definitely! One of the therapists in the rehab facility my mother was in ordered her a wheelchair (I didn't request one, I had already bought her a transport chair) to take home. Wheelchair was there when I came to pick her up and I told them that I didn't ask for it and it wasn't needed and I left it there. Turns out Medicare was being charged some crazy amount like $400 a month for us to rent it. It took me months and several phone calls to stop being billed for something we never had. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}

I remember responding to your post stargazer, but I don't see it here. It must have gone bye-bye . . . why, I don't know.

I was born in Hackensack and raised in Bergen County all of my life. We had colder winters up there than we do in South Jersey . . . don't know why, it's such a small state. I spent eight years in Springfield, VA, the suburbs of Wash. DC when I was married. Moved back up to North Jersey after my divorce, spent another seven years there, and moved down to SJ. Been here since 1977, almost 40 years and have no idea where the time went. But I am a Jersey Girl through and through, just like you!!
