I don't like the one where the little girl runs in grampa's office and says, "My teacher, Mr. X met a lady he really likes on one of those other sites--I told him it will never last". Dumb commercial IMO.

Yes ... my neighbor's daughter married a guy she met on one of the dating sites ... not sure which. Anyway, it didn't last ... they're divorced.

My co-worker met her husband on eHarmony.

They're not getting along at all.

It's not where you meet, it's who you meet. You could bump into someone on the street, be set up by your friends, meet online, see each other across a crowded bar.... the fact is, once you meet someone it's either there or it isn't. Dating sites try to eliminate a lot of the preliminary stuff that is critical to getting to know someone, the problem it that most people aren't completely truthful on their dating site profiles. Plenty of people that use those sites embellish the positives and downplay their negatives.. human nature. You need to either have amazing chemistry with someone, or spend a lot of time with them to learn who they truly are, be willing to accept them, flaws and all.... and that makes a successful relationship.

There is a company geared toward those 50 and up. I can't remember the name but the ad showed believably average people who looked their age.

I've been on Match, JDate, Plenty of Fish, OKCupid, Yahoo, Craig's List and now, a new one, the name of which escapes me. Needless to say, I am still single. In fact, not one date went beyond the first date. I can't even say I met a lot of great guys who just weren't for me. I didn't.

I think the whole on-line thing is way overrated, and most guys are looking for a beauty, not a woman who's okay-looking but has depth and character. I'm not sure what men's experience is on these sites, but my gut tells me they have the pick of the litter.

BTW, I have heard of friends of a friend who met their significant other on one of these sites. But I don't think that's typical.

So what's a woman who's 53 and too old for the bar scene to do? {#emotions_dlg.sad}

ETA: I tried to join Eharmony once, but I was rejected after I filled out a VERY long questionnaire and was told that their system doesn't work for everyone. Turns out, I was one of those for whom it doesn't work.

Thanks, Jules!

I just remembered the name of the over 50 site. It's called Our Time.

I have spoken to many guys about their experience on Match and they felt quite looked over. They felt like the girls had the pick of the litter and if they weren't in a high income bracket or exceptionally handsome they didn't get any response.

My mom is 70 and does a dating site. She's met some nice guys but she is so unrealistically picky and nitpicky that it never went very far. I think it's important to have an open mind.

Have you heard of the app on phones that lets you say yes or no to guys pictures?

I was at a party with a pretty 20 something co-worker. We laughed like CRAZY over that app...she ended up having lunch with at least 10 guys who liked her pic!

I can't remember the name...pinecone...evergreen....timber...something like that.
