Re: Do you still tip when going to someones house for a servive?

Oh I forgot to add... If something goes wrong like you get chemical burns, your hair breaks or your color is wrong you and she will have a problem.

The shop should have insurance to cover things that go wrong.  Hair done in the home on the side would not be covered by insurance.  Be aware of this and take caution.

Yes.  She's providing a service whether at salon or home.

Re: Do you still tip when going to someones house for a servive?

My nail lady has her shop in her home.  This thread is a suprise to me since it never occured to me to tip all these years!

Her materials cost much less than the cost of my appointment, so I  assume the rest is for her "service ".

I have had a picture framing studio at my home for 42 years and nobody ever tipped me!  I would have been floored if they did.  The quoted price of my work includes paying myself for my labor/time.

Why is that any different?  At tax time I can deduct a portion of my home as business expense, and pay quarterly taxes & repay sales tax.  I am sure my nail lady does the same since she is not "paid under the table" in cash either.

Now I will ask her if others tip her..... we never discussed it!  I do tip

my hairdresser as she is in a shop.

Did you ask her why she wanted you to come to her house?

Yes, and she said the salon controlled the products/colors used. In her home she could use what she wanted, better products.

I also cannot help wondering what the real reason is for her wanting to do your hair at home and not at the salon.

Are you friends?  Is she doing it to make it more convenient for you?

Is she just trying to get customers away from the salon so that she doesn't have to pay them a percentage?  If she is doing that, it's unethical and I'd probably pass on the whole deal with her.

If you and she are good friends and it's based on that, it's a different thing.  But since it was she who is trying to get you to come to her house instead of the salon, and you were not friends before this, then it's kind of hinky, IMO.

Oh, so as to the tip - if she is being dishonest, trying to get customers away from the salon to rip them off - well, I don't think it would be a matter of a tip because I'm not buying.  If you were previously friends and it's a convenience for her I probably would tip her.  But if she were a friend she would probably not accept tips anyway.  Smiley Happy

We are not friends. She is trying to make extra money as her "boyfriend" and father of her four kids does not work. I was never considering going to her apartment but was just curious to see what people on the forum thought. I have never come across something like this. And yes, I do think this is stealing from the salon.

I have never been to that type of shop but if I did; I would tip.  Of course.  The hairdresser is still providing the servive.  I know some here do not tip shop owners but I do.  If they are doing my hair I don't think it's fair to cheat them out of tip.

Even if the shop owner gets 100% of the fee?

Of course, for their service

And they still have overhead expenses.

Did you think it was strange to have her do you hair at her home? Are you friends outside the salon?

Not friends. She wants to make extra money under the pretense of getting better products that the salon does not use. This is a chain and they have guidelines they follow regarding products.

I would not tip her. She should also be charging less tha the salon.
