We purchased a loaf of rye bread (not on sale or a two for one deal) and just opened it and the bread is stale. The other day we purchased some yogurt that was sour.
Do you throw the stuff out or do you return it? I've seen people return things in the grocery store and our store has a no questions asked policy, even if the food was partially eaten, they issue a full refund with receipt or gift card without receipt.

Yes! Most all stores will refund you and apologize. But I always have a receipt to show.

Our stores ask that you not actually bring a spoiled item to the store, a receipt will do.
And yes, I will definitely take in the receipt and get a refund.

I live a long way from my grocery store, so unless it was a really expensive item...probably not.
My DH would ask "how do you know if yogurt is sour?"

Yes, I absolutely return it!!

I call the store and they say to get another or a refund next time I'm there.

Yes I return it.

I have only done it once with a can of biscuits that I opened and they were grey in color. Grossed me out. Got in my car and promptly returned them. Was only a couple of bucks but it was the principle of the thing.

depends if it is something I need immediately, how much I paid and my mood.

Let me add, I would probably not make a trip right back to the store unless it was an item needed immediately for something I was baking or cooking.
I go to the store weekly, usually, and would handle it then.
I agree that calling the store at the time you notice something is wrong is a good idea, I jot on the receipt who I spoke with.
